New Zealand Herald Office, £ Friday evening. ( The Customs duties to-day amounted to t £1245 19s 2d. c Mr. Richard Arthur's Weekly Re- c port.—A fairly busy week in all depart- a meats. Both fresh and corned butter very j scarce. Cheese in pretty good supply; firstclass samples sell freely. Bacon and hams of good quality in fair demand; stock slight. Onions in '.very large supply, far beyond v requirements. Potatoes remain about the ( same as last week ; no improvement in the ( price of those for household purposes ; a c little improvement in demand for seed. t Kidneys and magnums bring a better price. a A large supply of Hobart seed of good quality is coming to hand from the Wai- j kato. Grain and fodder have gone off in g fair quantity. Fruit: Apples have sold at i good prices; the supply not equal to the t demand. Lemons have come to hand in ] large quantity; prices continue low; ship- j ments from Sydney tend to keep the market low. Poultry in good demand at fair prices ; { supply below the demand. Dressed pork has brought satisfactory prices. Household , furniture and effects have been in demand, and { prices very satisfactory. Drapery, clothing, ] etc., dull ; prices in favour of the buyer, j Property: An allotment of about half an acre, with two five-roomed cottages thereon, _ in the village of Otahuhu, sold at auction by ( order of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, ( for the sum of £285 cash. There have been ] five sales by auction this week, a fair attendance at them all, and results satisfactory. < Tuesday: At the mart, properties in the , village of Otahuhu, by order of the Regis- , trar of the Supreme Court: two cottages and allotment or about half an acre was sold to Mrs. Elizabeth Crow for the sum of £285 f cash. Tuesday: Dairy farm, garden, and j orchard products, fruit, etc. Wednesday: j Household furniture and effects, mangle, etc. Thursday : An assorted lot of general dra- , pery, clothing, etc. _ Friday: Market day; produce of all kinds, grain, groceries, fruit, etc. A very heavy supply of Hobart potatoes and onions. Short of fresh and corned butter and fresh eggs. A good business lias been done through the week by private sale in produce, grain, etc. The following are the lowest and highest prices at which sales have been effected: — Fowls, Is 4d to 2a 3d; turkeys, small, 3s 3d : ducks, 2s 8d; table potatoes, local and Southern, 2s to 23 Gd; Hobart, seed, 3s; kidneys, 3s 6d to 3s 9d; Magnum Bonum, 4sJ: new potatoes, Ad to §d per lb; pumpkins, Is 7d to 2s; carrots, red 2s, white Is 3d; carrots, per dozen, 4d to 7&d; parsnips, B.|d to 9&d ; turnips, s&d to 7d ; beet, Is; celery, 4s to 10s; radishes, Is; cabbages, 9sd to Is Id, and 2s 4d per sack; onions, Jd to id per lb; cheese, 2d to 4d ; bacon, 5(1 to 6d; hams, s.|d to 8d; fresh butter, Is 3d to Is sd; corned Cutter, lid to Is; oats, 2s 2d; barley, 2s lid; sharps, 5s 3d ; bran, 4s 3d; chaff, la to Is 9d per sack ; oatmeal, 10s ; oranges, 5s ; mandarins, 9s 6d; apples, 2id to 3d; lemons, small, sjd per dozen. Messrs. Esam and Arthur's Weekly Report.—Business generally fully up to the average. In farm produce, prices are about the same except in potatoes, the market for which is in the most congested condition, and arrivals are still out of all proportion to requirements. We quote table potatoes at a nominal value of £2, with prospects of lower rates. Hobart seed: We suggested in our two previous reports that the Waikato growers should refrain from sending _ their seed for a time, as the demand was inconsiderable; yet the quantity received by rail during the week has been so large that we have had to engage storage space. The price nominally is £3; but sellers will, we fear, have to submit to a much lower figure. vV e notice Southern quotations are equal to £2 to £2 ss, delivered here. Maize : The market has taken an upward tendency, caused by an inquiry from Australia which has cleared stocks, but prices will fall in a few days 2s 6d may be taken a3 the week's rates. Oats are dull of sale. We have inquiries tor seed, Tartarian, and dun. Chaff: Market very dull at £3 for oaten sheaf. Bran and sharps move off steadily at £4 and £5 5s respectively. The usual demand for vegetables—pumpkins, carrots, etc. —ia_ balanced by supply ; onions are of poor quality. Dairy produce: Prime fresh butter— demand continues very good, and competition is brisk for recognised brands. We had a very fair supply for yesterday's auction, and prices ranged from Is 4d to la CJd (average former figure); of inferior grade, the supply is more Tentiful, and not so ready of sale. Keg utter is wanted, and all consignments sell on arrival. We recommend buyers to realise promptly, as the market will in all probability drop towards the end of _ the month. Eggs are plentiful, and prices, which are lower than la week's, range from 7dto7Sd, Grocers predict a further drop next week, but we are inclined to think present rates are at "bedrock." Bacon is dull of sale, the demand not being at all satisfactory. Cheese of prime quality is saleable at 4d to 4|tl; the supply is below demand; second and third grades are in sufficient supply for requirements. Fruit: Island steamers having brought large supplies of oranges prices of local are lower. Lemons are very plentiful, and also lower. The quantity of apples coming forward being small the values have improved. Poultry : Prices at auction were very good and competition brisk.
