Sir,— who closely watch- the course of politics are much exercised as to the. destination of the amount saved on our loan conversion. slsitto be thrown :on the floor p of the House, there to" be scrambled for, and applied to the construction of useless railways, unnecessary harbours, or purchase of • native p lands (this last a synonymous term for relieving friends of : white ; elephants; - With many others who hold a stake in New Zealand,' I share the opinion that the money saved by loan conversion ought to.be applied; to the liquidation of our colonial indebted- |i|g||| ness. Thfe material effect of such a course may not be so appreciable as many of us could desire, but its ! moral effect on our , colony no one can limit. . In rapid succession several heavy loans are maturing. Ihese we cannot pay, but by demonstrating to out creditors that we are not only anxious bat . . eager to reduce our :: indebtedness to - the • utmost of our ability, we wi l render . the - - conversion of maturing lo . au ,f, '^' ; j" minimise, our annual interest bill consider , ably.
