LICENSING MEETINGS.

' AUCKLAND EAST. j MORE SUNDAY TRADING COMPLAINTS. ONE HOUSE TO BE CLOSED. j The annual meeting of the Auckland East Licensing Committee ; was - held,: yesterday. Present: Messrs. J. J. Holland (chairman), J. T. Julian, T. T. Masefield, J. Winks, and C. Bailey. Mr. J. B. Stoney was the licensing clerk, and Inspector. Broham and SergeantMajor Pratt represented the police. Transfer.— transfer of the Imperial Hotel license, from M. Gallagher to T. C. Urquhart, ' was ' granted. Mr. Cotter, who appeared for the applicant, said he believed that not only was there no objection by the police, but . the committee were aware the house .had been splendidly conducted by Mr. Gallagher, and equally ,well since Mr. UrquI hart had entered into possession. :, Renewals.—Renewals of existing licenses were granted as follow, the police offering no J objections : —Central 'Hotel, S. C. Caulton; Queen's Head, J. Darby: Britomart, Andrew 1' ernandez; Park, G. H. Easton; Grand, F. | Gaudin; City . Club, Sarah Jacobs; Commercial, A. Kldd; Swan, James • O'Shea; Caledonian, : F. o'Dowd ; ■■■Globe, * Joseph Parkes : Wynyard Arms, H. C. Richmond; ! Occidental, J. W. Russell; Queen's Ferry, W. Stimpson; Fitzroy, Annie Zeigler; "and Imperial. T. C. Urquhart. With regard to the Occidental the Chairman remarked that the committee were now more satisfied with the hou.'ise than they had formerly been. The' Thames Hotel—"Renewal applied for by S. Coombe. The Chairman said that this wan one of the hotels complained against for Sunday trading. Independent of, the police report, the committee heard that this trading was carried on very much, and were not all- satisfied with, the house. The licensee must take warning' that ; if this were continued, his license would bo cancelled. The committee also found that some small repairs were required inside. Mr. Hesketh, who appeared for the applicant, said, the internal arrangements' would be attended to,. but the 'other matter was of a more serious nature., Inspector Broham • had said at a previous licensiug meeting that no hotelkeeper would be fool enough to say that lie did Sunday trading, but Mr. Coombe did say so. His house was so situated that lie could not do otherwise, numerous persons from Birkenhead and elsewhere calling at the hotel for refreshment. If Mr. Coombe did not supply such persons he would be guilty of an offence under the Act, and these were the only persons that he did supply. ' Mr. Coombe admitted the Sunday trading, but said it was only the trading which r,he Act made absolutely compulsory, If the committee, could; suggest any means for supplying persons who had slept more than three miles away on the previous night, j Mr. Coombe would follow their advice. The Chairman said the committee could make no suggestion, except that he should take every care that the persons whom he served were bona fide travellers. Renewal granted. V Clarkndon Application for renewal by William Lynch. The Chairman said'.- this was another of the hotels complained of, and Mr. Lynch had received a good many warnings with regard to it. The committee were also dissatisfied with the state of the house. At half-past one p.m. the bedrooms had been found in an untidy state. The committee would inspect the hotel again, and ' therefore the application would be adjourned till the 29th instant. Mr. Cotter, on behalf of the applicant, asked if the renewal could not be granted subject to the police • approving of the condition of -lie house? The Chairman said the committee would visit the house again, and the license would be granted if its condition met with their approval. ' ' Pacific Hotel.Application for a renewal by R. T. Michaels, 1 he Chairman said the I committee had had a long discussion as-to this hotel. The renewal would be granted,:; but the whole of. the circumstances connected with it would be; considered at the next annual meeting. >... « . ... Wavjerly Hotel. — Application for renewal by G. I. Panter. The Chairman ,said : he was surprised that this large hotel should be also complained of for Sunday trading,' and the licensee must take notice that if such a thing continued some steps would have to be taken to.put a stop to it. : Mr.; Cotter said this house was also so situated that it was frequented by a large number of travellers whom the licensee was bound to serve. Mr. Panter distinctly denied that lie . supplied any other persons than those the Act authorised him to, supply. The Chairman said the committee', could only go upon the . police report, if they did not consider that, there would be no use in having it. Renewal granted. ' '' ' Railway Terminus Hotel.—Application for renewal by Peter Purcell. Mr. Fleaketh for applicant.' : The Chairman said.there was nothing against the way in which the house' was kept and conducted, but the committee thought the building should be renewed. Although clean and orderly, the hotel was very old and dilapidated, and it might, the committee thought, collapse altogether some day. The house was required in the''neighbourhood, and while there was no necessity for an elaborate building, a new one ought to be put up within the next twelve months. On that understanding the renewal would bo granted.' Mr. Hesketh said no doubt . the proprietors would see what could be done in the matter. • < ,\ ■ 1 The Provincial Hotel.—Application', for renewal by, Marion Stewart. _ The chairman said there 7 were reports against this house for Sunday trading. The committee were not satisfied with it at all, and, after due consideration, they-* had decided to ' give twelve months notice that the house was not required in the neighbourhood. Mr. Cotter, as representing one of the owners, said he supposed it would be open for them to urge their claims when . the . application came up at next annual meeting. The chairman said the committee could not object to an application being made, and of course it would -be open for the applicant to urge his claim as he thought fit. The committee simply wished to intimate that so far as they could now see the house was not required. The renewal for twelve months would be - granted. >5 Mr. Cotter said he only wished -to guard against being told at next annual r meeting that lie should have gone fully into the matter at this one. .. / r ■ EPSOM. ( * At the annual X meet jug of the Epsom Licensiug , Committee,/ held on the 3rd instant, at 319, Victoria Arcade, present : Messrs. H. Rees George (chairman),' W. S. Cochrane, J. Andrews, and W. Edgerley, with the clerk (Mr. Seaman), and the inspector (Constable Rist). After confirming the minutes of previous, meetings and receiving a favourable police report respecting the Epsom Hotel, the which, however, suggested the need of a fire escape, a certificate was granted authorising the renewal of licence to Mr. James Gordon Wattie, subject to a lireescape, to be approved by ! the ■ inspector, being at once provided. TAMAKI WEST. r , - The annual meeting of the Tamnki West Licensing Committee was held ■ at Pamnure on Tuesday, there . being 'present Messrs. Gavin (chairman), Corrigan, Donnelly: and Menzies, with the clerk, Mr. Seaman. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, i" and' a favourable report of the three hotels in the district was received from the inspector, wild was unavoidably absent. Renewals of ; licenses was then granted for the St. Heliers, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Patimure, Hotels. The application for removal of the latter to the new and spacious building in ;■." course of erection was deferred for consideration at the next meeting, on September 10, the building not being completed as was expected. Mr. Cotter, on behalf of the proprietors of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, asked for and obtained the promise of the committee to sanction also the removal of that license in September to a new house which they were prepared to erect on a site at the junction of the Paumuro anil Otahuhu Roads, to avoid the two hotels being in such close proximity as they otherwise would be. Mr. Moss D&vis submitted plans for the proposed new house, which were approved by the committee. In order that the present committee might deal with the two applications for removal, it was dccidcd to ask the Returning Officer to hold the election of committee late in September, that being tho month in which the local option poll was taken in 18SS. THAMES. . - . , . The annual meetings of the Parawai and Hastings Licensing Committees 'were held yesterday, all the members being present. The whole of the applications for renewals wore in each case granted, with the exception of tho three hotels in the Ivirikiri native licensing district, which is included in the jurisdiction of the Hastings Committee, with the addition of the Native Assessor (YViropo Taipari). The three houses mentioned are J. Teddy's Hauralci Hotel, W. C. Williams' lvopu Hotel, and Hon Matene's Kirikiri Hotel. . The assessor- was, in favour of granting a renewal for the latter, but in the ease of the two former ho insisted that they should be closed, Tlio committee announced that in view of the assessor, they had no option but to close the three hotels. Messrs. Miller and Purehas addressed tho Bench at some length, and it was elicited that Taipari opposed the two hotels because he stated they ; supplied the natives with liquor on Sunday. Mr. Miller then offered, on behalf of Mr. Williams, to insert a clause in tho latter's license that lie would not, under powerof cancellation, supply natives with liquor at any time, and asked whether this would meet the assessor's views,.

Taipari replied-that be would take time to consult the natives on' the subject, - and eventually the throe applications were adjourned< for a fortnight. Both. committees also announced that they were determined to suppress Sunday trading, and with this object in view had decided that ; any licensee '' convicted of Sunday trading should, on the first offence, have his license cancelled.
