A NEW FORAGE PLANT.
v [BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT. : . Wellington, Wednesday. , A ' sample of the seeds of . a recently-dis* covercd or newly-developed forage plant has been sent* to the Surveyor-General's Department here, which it • is; asserted yields ;25 tons- of forage to the acre in the most arid and sandy soils, its roots penetrating to great depths and rapidly;, converting, by the chemical action of its numerous rootlets the most sterile tracts of country into fertile food-producing : land. Great areas of barren wastes in Austria and Hungary, have proved y its extraordinary success. ' If its success' be equal in New Zealand, there is a magnificent future yet for the barren lands and the great plateaux of the Kaingaroa and adjacent regions in the interior ' of 1 the r Auckland ■ province, hitherto looked upon as only fib at the best for pastoral purposes." r :•
