; A discovery likely 'to prove one of the most important that lias been made in the medical world for years is published iii the following paragraph : —Prof. German See, of Paris, has long been engaged in study to learn what elements in milk rendered it such an admirable agent to stimulate the .kidneys, increase the flow therefrom, and hence prove of such great service in dropsies. 'An a result of bis investigation lie is convinced that the one important element is sugar of milk.' Acting upon this theory, be selected twenty-fivo patients ' with heart disease, in all of which there was more or le?s .dropsy. To each he gave 100 grammes of the sujjar of milk a day, dissolved in two quarts of water. In all these oases a marked effect upon the kidneys was felt within twenty-four to forty-five hours, : and the dropsies diminished rapidly, and almost, all 'such swelling disappeared altogether after a series of treatments lasting from six to eight days. • ' /.v• , As a settler on the Great Barrier Island, I desire to express my regret at losing an old and respected settler (Airs. : Sptinsjhall) and family from our midst. We, -as settlers on the island, sympathise with her in the loss of her husband, who died some months ago, which caused her to leave the island after about .30 years' residence 011 it. We are loth to part with old settlers, but pleased to see new ones. No doubt there are other settlers who think with ' us if they had opportunity to give expression to their feelings. Our sincere wish is that,' wherever they may reside, God's blessing may rest uuon them.—£ Correspondent.]
