On .-■■ Monday evening last a very successful - concert and social * eventuated at St " ■■' Mary's Hal!, Howick. Monsignor Mc- jfl Donald, who. I had • returned from the volunteer : gathering or sham fight" at ; Devonport, presided, and introduced the \J items of a well selected programme. The weather was everything that could be desired, especially for the return home in a country, district, and the hall, though large, was perfectly packed with ■an appreciative audience, whose verdict appeared to be for imperative encores on the part of the kind :■':■} j artistes. The pupils of the school acquitted, ■„ themselves very creditably/ especially in reci-'-; ■"-' tation, and' the pretty chorus,'"Spring, 3 .■.!.'•;. giving evidence of the careful training re* ' ; '• ceived ;at the ' hands of: Miss Mulkere, who played the accompaniments throughout with -J considerable musical taste. 'The Howick' and Pakuranga Fife and Drum Band, led byiSM Mr. Smith, rendered valuable service, and all B|| spoke in high praise of their excellent playing. The hall looked quite bright and cheerful, owing to the 'admirable lighting, and the decorative designs with choice nikau. The clog dance proved a source of great amusement and fairly brought * down the house. Light refreshments, j including, of course, . " sweets, were handed round at the interval, ; 5 arid afforded a certain* amount of comfort '. It must be said to the credit ■. of Mr. Brady, -; that :he supplied : the after-music (violin) to ||| the intense enjoyment of one and all, while %m Mr. O'Halloran, as usual, made a capital if M.C. The evening, on the whole, was one of the pleasantest passed- in the homely and picturesque village of Howick for many a long day.
