SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ANNUAL ELECTIONS. fatpmahoe AND WEST MAUKU.

No burning question here now, as shown by . the recent meetings. At Patumahoe there was barely enough to hold a meeting. Tho old committee were all re-elected, consisting of Messrs. W. T. Wright, Moor, Henry, McFadden, Yates, J. Boden, and T. Watson. At West Mauku there were seven names posted up as received by the chairman: —Messrs. J. Fitilay, W. R. Wright, Worth, Rowe, Walker, Gallagher, and J. Adolph ; and at the annual meeting held on April 27 there were only four householders present, four of tho above elected nob even showing up. A protest was lodged against Mr. Adolph, as he does nob reside in the district, which protest was upheld by the Board of Education, so I presume there will have to be an election for one member.—[Own Correspondent.]

TUIIUA. Monday, the 27th, being the day for electing: a school committee, a meeting was held in the school house, when the following were elected :—Messrs. R. W. Bagnall, W. H. Bagnall, H. N. Bagnall, J. T. Jewam, C. \Vhituiore, M. Jamieson, and A. E. Bagnall. At the meeting of committeee held after the election Mr. R. W. Bagnall was elected chairman, a position he has held for several years. — [Own Correspondent.]

TAIRUA. The annual meeting of householders was held on April 27 in the school house. There was a fair attendance, Mr. Hull, chairman of late committee, in the chair. The Chairman submitted a statement giving an account of the stewardship of the committee during the past year. It would require but few words to unveil the mysteries of their doings. Mr. Field, hon. secretary, would willingly explain any mystery that may appear in the accounts, so that he would only tell them there had been twelve meetings of the committee, held monthly, during the past year. The school had been inspected in standards and pronounced fairly good, and the head teacher, Mr. H. B. Wilson , and his tat, Miss Mary E. psey, have given general satisfaction. The committee have applied to the Board of Education for an enlargement of tho school, but, as yet, have received no reply. Under the new regulations, the accounts from January, IS9O, to March, 1891, were required to be audited by the auditor appointed by the Board, in accordance with which regulation they forwarded the necessary vouchers for their term of office. The secretary would read to them the auditor's reply, and the incoming committee would take what steps they may think fit. He asked the meeting to appoint two auditors to audit the balance-sheet for the past year, after which the meeting would proceed to elect their successors. Messrs. W. Howell and \V. Jeffery were then duly appointed auditors. The Secretary read the balancesheet, showing a credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £7 13s lOd, less two accounts of 7s lOd and £1 10s, due at the end of this month, leaving the sum of £5 lGs for the new committee to commence operations with. The accounts having been duly audited and found correct, were adopted by the meeting on the motion of Mr. Raw, seconded by Mr. O'Neill. The chairman having vacated the chair, Mr. J. Is'eill was appointed chairman, and Mr. W. E. Jeffery, secretary, and the meeting proceeded to elect a new committee with the following result of tho ballot:—R. Raw, 1G; A. S. Edmonds, 15 ; IX Thomson, sen., 14; A. Furber, 11 ; H. Laycock, 10 ; T. Driffill, 10 ; W. Bell, 9 ; G. Laycock, 8; G. Adams, 7 ; J. Gamble, 7 ; G. Moore, 7. The first seven were declared duly elected. At a meeting held by tho new committee immediately afterwards, Mr. I). Thomson was elected chairman, and Mr. A. S. Edmonds, secretary.[Own Correspondent.]

MANGAWAI. The school committee election took place as advertised, when Messrs. John Wharfe, Thomas Eyre, K. H. Moir, A. Smith, P. James, arid J. H. Ryan, were elected. Eleven were nominated, but they all withdrew so as to legalise the election. Mr. Boldero, acting as chairman, read the advertisement convening the meeting, the balance-sheet, and the Act lately passed. Tlio receipts wore £11 Is 6.1; the expenditure, with the exception of the bank balance, ..was almost the same. The total was not 'entered in the balance-sheet, which apparently was overlooked by the auditor. With that exception all was correct. The cost of cleaning, etc., some £5 odd, appears heavy. There was no entry of any charge for the use of the building. When tea parties, elections, meetings, etc., take place in the schoolroom, a small charge should bo made, which should be entered to the credit of the committee, and not taken and disposed of without the knowledge of the committee. These receipts should be used for painting and repairs, as well as cleaning.— [Own Correspondent.] NORTH ALBERTLAND. For the school committee there being two in excess nominated, one retired beforo the day, thinking " Discretion the better part of valour," which still left one too many. This was decided on Monday, 27th April. Every available vote was recorded, with only two exceptions that lam aware of. A considerable number were proxies. After preliminaries had been cone through, and scrutineers appointed (Messrs. F. G. Clarke and Thomas Home), the result of the poll was as follows : —Oliver Heywood, 19 ; Thomas Wharfe, 17 ; William Ward, 15 ; George Farrand, 15 ; Isaac Powell, 14 ; W. B. Farrand, 13 ; Edmund Yates, 11; Robt. Henderson, 8. All but the last-named were elected the committee. The vigour and weight used in many instances for the erasure of names showed " the outward and visible sign of the inward man." The newly-elected committee appointed Mr. W. B. Farrand chairman, and Mr. George Farrand secretary. The retiring chairman, Mr. E. Browne, has held the office for fifteen years consecutively.[Own Correspondent.]
