Sydney, May 3. There is considerable excitement in silver mining owing to,further rich finds. Centrals and all stock at Broken Hill are moving upwards. The latest quotations are : Centrals, £6 ; South, £5 14s ; Block 10, £14 16s.
MADAME PATEY TO VISIT NEW
ZEALAND.
Sydney, May 3. Madame Patey, the celebrated contralto, intends paying a visit to New Zealand, and leaves for Auckland on the 18th instant in R.M.s. Mariposa.
INCREASE OF CABLE MESSAGES.
Adelaide, May 2. An unusually large number of cable messages were sent under the reduced rates which came into operation yesterday.
POPULATION OF ADELAIDE. Adelaide, May 2. The census shows the population of the city and suburbs to be 133,000. THE QUEENSLAND STRIKE. Brisbane, May 2. An eight hours' demonstration took place at Barcaldine yesterday, when 1200 unionists marched in procession. The chairman of the Strike Committee intimated that the Pastoralkts preferred to arbitrate, but the men would fight the matter out to the bitter end. He said that from evidence he was convinced of the truth of the attempted poisoning of troops by means of an apple poisoned with strychnine, and called upon every unionist to assist in producing the culprit. /The proceedings were orderly. It is estimated that £1600 will be required weekly to maintain the strike.
