PROBLEM No. 006. (From Selected Positions in the "Two nuiVO Chess Problem," by 11. J. C. Andrews.) Buck, 9.

AUCKLAND CHESS CLUB.

The annual meeting of the club took place on Thursday evening, at Robson's Rooms, Mr. A. Hosking (president) being in the chair. It is gratifying to learn from the report presented by the secretary that, despite the loss of some of the best players through death and removal from Auckland, interest in the game has not only been sustained, but increased during the past twelve months, and that financially the club was never in a better position. As the New Zealand Congress is to be held in Auckland towards the end of the year, and the southern districts will be represented bv strong players, it behoves members to be assiduous in their attention to practice, so that a creditable local record may be shown. The report stated that at the beginning of the year there was a balance of 19s, and at its close this had been increased to £4 Is. A match had been played with the late Ponsonby Club, the latter being defeated by 11 games to '2. The usual winter handicap tournament, in which twenty-four members took part, eventuated in Mr. J. F. Sloman taking the first prize, and Mr. George Cozens second. A consolation prize presented by the president was won by Mr. Johns. The prize presented by Mr. Percival for the 'most brilliant game was carried off by Dr. Lawry. Reference was made to the sealed handicap tournament in connection with the club championship, which will shortly be brought to a close, the report stating that Mr. Malcolm stood every chance of being the winner. Regret was expressed at the loss through death of one of the club's best players in the person of Mr. W. Munro. On the motion or Mr. C. F. Marks, seconded by Mr. Malcolm, Mr. ITosking was re-elected president. The Presidknt spoke highly of the services which Mr. Ash ton had rendered to the club during the seven years he had acted as secretary, and moved his reappointment to that office. Air. Jowitt, who seconded the motion, said that the success of the club was chiefly owing to the secretary's efforts. Mr. Ashton was disposed to decline nomination, but in deference to the goodhumoured insistance of tho meeting, he consented to occupy the position for another twelve months.

The motien was passed with enthusiasm. The Prksidkxt, on behalf of the club, then presented Mr. Ashton with a handsome clock, the work of Mr. A. G. Bartlett, Queen-street. The clock is of black marble, with mottled marble inlaid, and has a plate with the inscription, "Presented to Mr. A. Ashton by the members of the Auckland Chess Club, as a slight recognition of his services in the interests of chess. April 30, 1891." Mr. Ashton, in suitable term 3, acknowledged the presentation. In view of the fact that the New Zealand Congress was to be held in Auckland this year, instead of the customary committee, it was resolved to appoint a larger one, so that all necessary arrangements in connection with the Congress might be made. The following gentlemen were elected :— Messrs. J. M. Lennox, C. F. Marks, Woodruffe, Dr. Purchas, Dr. Lawry, Messrs. J. F. Sloman, Jowitt, Malcolm, Percival, Cozens, Gorrie, and Major Gascoigne. Votes of thanks were accorded Mr. Robson for the use of his rooms outside the regular meeting nights ; to Mr. Marks for the uniform courtesy always displayed by him in his capacity of handicapper ; also to Mr. Percival and Dr. Purchas for donations of prizes.

PONSONBY CHESS AND DRAUGHTS CLUB. A meeting for the purpose of forming a club took place at the Od.lfcllows' Hall, Ponsonby, on Monday evening, Mr. W. J. Rees being voted to the chair. It was intimated that about thirty gentlemen were likely to become members, so that there is every probability of a strong club being formed. The meeting, though consisting principally of chessplayers, wisely determined to include draughts, as even on the score of economy it is better that the sister game should be associated, saving as it does the rent of a separate meeting-room. Mr. J. If. Upton was*appointed president, and Mr. Fairs secretary and treasurer. Messrs. Stewart, Jones, and Fairs were elected a provisional committee to draw up rules, etc., and the election of the other officers was deferred to another meeting, to be held at the same placeon Monday next. It was resolved to dispense with an entrance fee, and the contribution per quarter was fixed as low as 2s 6d.

CABLE MATCH: STEINITZ V. TSCHI-

GORIN.

This match, which had been interrupted by the contest between Gunsberg and Steinitz, has since been resumed, and the scores up to latest advices will be found below. But a cable in yesterday's issue announces what has been anticipated by some of the critics, that both the games have gone against Steinitz :—
