THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.
Nominations of candidates for seats on the Licensing Committee for the Parnell district) were received up to noon yesterday by the returning officer, Captain E. Thomas. The following gentlemen (a moderate ticket) were proposed :—Messrs. James Gilmour, Chas. Kay, John McCabe, Napean W. Pollard, and George Paynes. There being no other candidates nominated, those five were declared duly elccted. At a meeting of city and suburban Wesleyun ministers held last evening at the house of the Rev. Mr. Gittos, the question arose as to the action, if any, which they should take in reference to the licensing elections next week. It was ascertained that there was some difficulty in ascertaining exactly what course the candidates on both sides intended to adopt if elected. The opinion was generally expressed that it was extremely important that a manifesto should be issued, by both parties, setting forth their proposals. In our advertising columns will be found the lists of the prohibition candidates and of those called " the moderate party" for the various city wards. The polling-dav is Wednesday, and for Auckland East at Charitable Aid Board Room, High-street; Auckland South, Catholic Institute, Wel-lington-street ; Auckland North, Young Men's Christian Association Building, Al-bert-street ; Ponaonby, Oddfellows' Hall. In relation to the moderate " ticket" for Auckland North, Messrs. A. J. Tapper, Hobson Hotel, John Morrison, Royal Mail, and H. Meyer, Albion, notify elsewhere that they withdraw their names from the published list of those pledged to vote for the candidates named. They allege that they gave their signatures through a misrepresentation. Mr. John Endean, Waitemata Hotel, also withdraws, and " now holds himself free to vote and work for any ticket or candidate he pleases." A meeting of city ratepayers will be held on Tuesday evening, in the Foresters' Hall, Karangahapo Road, at eight o'clock, when the prohibition candidates will address the electors upon the reasons for the present contest. It is notified that all friends of prohibition willing to assist the cause during the elections of Wednesday next are requested to attend or communicate with the election committee meeting at the Foresters' Hall, to-night. Aid with vehicles for use on Wednesday is asked by the committee.
In some of the city pulpits, to-morrow, the temperance question will be dealt with, in view of the licensing elections.
