SPORTING.

THE A.J.C. MEETING. From Sydney papers to hand by the s.s. Manapouri, we glean full particulars of Carbines defeat in the All-Aged Stakes at the hands of Marvel, and her subsequent victory over the son of Marvellous in the Cumberland Stakes. The defeat of the champion in the first-named race, is by many ascubecl to the fact of his being raced barefooted, while Marvel had " tips" on, to prevent hnn slipping 011 the wet grass. In the Cumber land Stakes, Hickenbotham had Carbine shod in light plates, which enabled hini to make full use of his terrible stride- From the Sydney Morning Herald we take the following description of the two races in questloU "the ALL- aged stakes (one mile). _ | Betting : 5 to 2 on Carbine, 3 to 1 against Marvel. After one break-away the flag went down to an excellent start, and Carbine, who, though last, was fairly on the move, at once dashed to the front. Corvette at once joined him, and they rattled past the seven furlongs on terms, with the other two half a length away, and Euroka just showing m front ot Marvel. They raced up the lull at a solid pace, Carbine just showing in front ot Corvette and Euroka, while Marvel was a length and a-half away in waiting, and so they sailed past the half-mile post. When half-wav round the bend Corvette retired, and Carbine just led E uroka into the straight, with Marvel a length and a-half on, and going well within himself. Once fairly in the straight Carbine made a bee-line for home, but Marvel caught him at the distance, and Rant age was compelled to draw his whip. Carbine responded right gallantly, but the black horse ran past hjin as if he had been anchored, and leaving the champion at every stride, defeated him very easily by four lengths. Eureka was a dozen lengths off, and '20 lengths from him came Corvette. Time, lm. 435. THE CUMBERLAND STAKES (two miles).

Betting: 5 to 4 on Carbine, 10 to 9 v. Marvel. They left the post at a ladies canter, and Marvel showed the way round the bend and into the straight by three lengths. Reefing hard to get his head free, the son of Marvellous cantered past the stand a couple of lengths ahead of Carbine, who had dropped into his usual loping stride, and had evidently settled down to do business on his own account. Save that Marvel continued to pull Harris out of the saddle, and that Carbine decreased the gap, no change took place until after passing Oxenham's house, when the pace gradually increased, and Carbine, as if determined to have his revenge, began to get closer to the black. At the end of a mile and a-lialf Marvel was still fighting for freedom, with Carbine a length and a-quarter away, and .going strongly. The next furlong was run at a wonderful pace, and as Carbine crept up foot by foot the pace became too desperate for Marvel to pull any longer, and they raced locked level past the half-mile post, neither apparently having any advantage; but about 100 yards further on Carbine's game old head was seen in front, and so they came round the bend. Just as the home corner was turned Marvel made one mighty effort, and got on terms, but the champion, answering and resenting the challenge, shook him oil, and settling down to one of ' those desperate runs which have made his name famous throughout the world, drew away at every stride, and Marvel, dying away, the great racehorse left him in the run home, and won comfortably by about seven lengths. Time, 4m. 4s. * When it was seen that Carbine had got back his laurels there was the wildest excitement. The appearance of the Hon. Mr. Wallace at the weighing scale was the signal for rounds of cheers, and congratulations were also showered upon W alter Hickmbotham. It was a scene second only to that at the finish of the last Melbourne Cupsecond onlv because there were fewer people at Randwick than at Flemington. lhe great horse and everyone connected with him were mobbed by an enthusiastic crowd, and they followed him in hundreds to the stalls, and with the arrival of each fresh contingent there was further cheering. So dense was the crowd about Carbine that for some time there was not room to rub him down, the horse standing like a sheep, while people were being jostled against him. So much enthusiasm lias scarcely, if ever before, been witnessed at Randwick.

THE STEEPLECHASE. The steeplechase run at the same meeting was a chapter of accidents, for six out of the eight contestants came to grief at different stages of the game, but with the exception of the inevitable _ shock to the system, the rirlerswere \ little the worse for the mishaps that are almost inseparable from cross-country contests. The horses also escaped unhurt barring the New Zealauder, Guv Fawkes, who had one of his fetlocks slightly injured. Guy Fawkes, who started a warm favourite at 7 to 4, was ridden by W. Hadfield.
