I The Hon. W. Reeves, of Christchurcli, whose death is notified in our columns, was one of the best known and most highly-respected of our earlier colonists. For thirty years past he has taken an active part in the public and commercial affairs of Canterbury, and has zealously and honestly served his day and generation. He was a partner with Mr. Crosby Ward in the establishment of the Lyttelton Times—a newspaper which took a leading part in the subjects which agitated the public mind in the early days. Mr. Reeves became a member of the House of Representatives in 1867, and it may be said that ever since he has been in political life. He was Resident Minister for the South Island in the FoxVogel Ministry, having special charge of Public Works and Immigration. He did not after this, however, seek to take ahy prominent part in political administration, as he was fully occupied by his private business, and by the many commercial enterprises in Canterbury Avith which he was connected. He has been for over thirty years one of the proprietors of the Lyttelton Times, and he was the chairman and one of the founders of the Press Association. Mr. Reeves was a man of strict integrity. He had an intense belief in the colony, and was anxious in every way to promote its progress and well-being. In politics he was a genuine Liberal, and strove to achieve any measure which he believed would bo of benefit to the great body of the people. Mr. W. P. Reeves, the present Minister of Education, is a son of the deceased gentleman.
