Italy seems to have taken the lynching of the Italian murderers at New Orleans very sorely to heart, which one would not have expected considering how often the law has been defied in Italy itself by brigands and conspirators. The Government at Washington can only reply to the representations of Italy that the utmost will be done to bring to justice those disorderly people who shot the Sicilians. We presume that the Italian Government cannot prove that the American Government, or the Government of the State of Louisiana, who really were the parties concerned, are shielding the lynchers. And the American Government may answer Italy by saying that the plotting and murdering in New Orleans by these Sicilian desperadoes has made administration almost impossible. " It seems absurd to think that Italy is willing to go to war with America because the State of Louisiana cannot enforce the law in all particulars as respects foreigners, seeing that Italy herself has had to confess many failures during the last few years. Possibly Italy wants to try the effect of some of her big ironclads. The experiment may be a costly one, for Brother Jonathan is not likely to give way to bounce.
