WELLINGTON DEFENDED.
TO THE EDITOR. Sie, —In your issue of this morning you report the proceedings of a public meeting re Waitemata Bridge, &c, and in reading it over I find that Mr. Napier, a prominent public man, I presume amongst you, making the astounding statement to the meeting the colony will have to stir itself, or a qua©* ter of a million of money will be spent upon the Te Aro extension of the railway in Wellirjg. ton. Now, Mr. Napier (if he knows anything at all about the matter) knows this to be an absolute fact, that the cost of the proposed extension is estimated by the Government officials, and supported by the opinion and estimates of competent outside authorities, at £13,000. To conclude, let me inform Mr. Napier and those gentlemen wha are so anxious to further the advancement of your beautiful city, that the Wellington citizens are quite prepared to put their hands in their pockets and carry out the line themselves, and have intimated to the Governmeat their willingness to do so, and have, asked permission to carry out the work. What we require in Wellington we are quite prepared to pay for (to wit, the Wellington and Manawatu line) ourselves if only al* lowed to do it unhampered by ofßcialdom. God helps them who help themselves. 1 ollow on the lines laid down by the Welling? tomans, Mr. Napier, and dump down the needful from amongst yourselves. You have entered upon a better spec than the one you are now advocating, and I shall be most happy to assist you, although a Wellington man—lam,&c, P. Cofsxy.
