COMMERCIAL.

+ New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. A satisfactory sameness best describes the week's state of trade, but we are bound to mention that outside of consumptive goods and metals, business is reported slow. Payments on the 20th were indicative of a very excellent financial state, the several leading counting houses looking like deposit banks. # Everything in the import market is practically in statu quo. (Jornsacks continue to travel downwards, but the bottom must be touched now. We learn that speculation has followed the continual fall 01 Calcutta rates, and that now only long forward delivery contracts are looked at, the capacity of the various mills being engaged for several months to come. This baa stopped holders from making any farther reductions. Rice is very much in the same position; a constantly looking for " bulrock," as the American miners say, makes buyers shy of fixing business to any extent. '('here ie so far no indication of any lower rates than are now current. Sales have been made at £15 15a and £16, In bond, in wholesale parcels, for No. 1 Japan. Sugars are unchanged. The improved colour of No. 2 Company's standard is favourably commented on of late. American cubes have been sold in the South freely. Yellows are in slow request. Brewers' crystals are more active, with stocks difficult to keep op, owing to the diminished production in Mauritius of this grade. The white crystals have long taken the place of the straw coloured in Australia, but in New Zealand the brewers much prefer Mauritius sugars. In teas, the market is becoming more and more a close one to the comparative few blenders. Occasionally a line of original packages is placed to a retailer in a. large way, but the rarity only proves the rule. The curious thing at present about tea is that everyone says the market is rising, and yet everyone wants to sell teas. We cannot believe there is a vast conspiracy to deceive, because we have seen proofs or higher costsm FoochowandCalcutta, but Melbourne, Sydney, and Southern travellers commence to talk tea as the strong line, and yet while wishful of selling, they all state what a wonderful rise is certain. Some unfathomed contradiction is apparent. We simply describe the position. Paints and oils continue in good request. Fine salt has been done in large parcels ex Persian Empire. Vinegar and whole black pepper are moving freely. Hops are also in excellent inquiry. Fair business is reported in pickles. Desiccated cocoanut is wanted in the local, Southern and Australian markets. Notwithstanding Lent, the demand for fish is slow; a little business is going through in salt salmon and boneless cod. Ling is wanted. A large quantity of maize for thi3 time of year still remains in growers' hands along the coast, who should have quitted while good prices were offering. We fear they will now nave to accept a much lower price, as the Sydney market has collapsed, and best prices there for old maize are 2s 8d to 2s 9d, at which figure there is a large supply, with a prospect of much lower prices in two weeks' time. Locally we quote 2s 9d, ex wharf, with a very weak market. Local growers of oats are offering at Is 9d, and buyers are not anxious to operate at the moment. We think this price' will improve shortly, as no Southern oate could be landed at anything like the money, and while we hear very conflicting reports of the Southern crops, we think their crops will undoubtedly be much short of an average, and this grain should be worth our local farmers holding for a short time. Potatoes are in very short crop all over the colony, and there is not the slightest doubt that high prices will rule for this important bulb at no distant date. Owing to exports and and purchases for export to Islands, stocks are about cleared. The market is regulated by the weather, as with plenty of newly dug coming into town, prices soon recede, and vice versa. Value to-day, £3 10s to £4 lOs. The new crop of chaff is now in the market, and several sales have been made of large parcels, but the price Is withheld. We understand the quantity of really first-class oaten sheaf chaff is limited, and we think , prices will improve. In ryegrass and cocksfoot a lot of business , ia taking place; and, if country reports are to be relied upon, a very much larger area than even last year will be laid down in grasses. At all the Southern ports these ; seeds are being bought freely as soon as they i come into the market, and we think the • prices will be higher very shortly. . ! Milling wheat, local and Southern : The j heavy rain we had on Saturday and Sunday , has again damaged our local wheat. We are glad to hear that better weather prevails in 1 the South, and in several districts there the ] harvest prospects are improving. Millers ; have not started buying new wheat yet. j Fowl wheat: Some farmers are selling by ( auction at low prices. j Bran and sharps are dull of sale. ! Flour is not in much demand at present. In the local produce market, the prices re- ■ main unchanged. Best dairy butter is 7d, ! second quality 6d, and third quality scl per ( lb wholesale. Eggs are somewhat scarce, '. but no change in price has yet taken place, 1 At presenp they command Is per dozen wholesale, and Is 3d per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. ] Prices for all qualities are very unsettled, ' and with an apparent downward tendency, j Ordinary ia weak in price, owing to the poor ( qualities sent in. After our last report was ( printed, one or two of the smaller buyers 1 came into the market, and one parcel of East } Coast was sold last week at 565, but as some 1 of the larger buyers have stopped buying ( until price recedes to 50s, we can still only j juote East Coast nominally. Supplies for twenty-five clays of February are about 440 tons. Wo quote :—Poor ordinary; 32s to 365; :a,ir ordinary, 37s to 395; best ordinary r nominal), 40s; and East Coast, buyers nominal), 50s to 555, sellers (best quality), I )ss. , I . ■ —-— g LIVE STOCK & PRODUCE MARKETS. { AUCKLAND- I Messrs.
