RAGLAN (TE MATA) SPORTS.

A most enjoyable picnic took place at Te Mata, given by the residents of the district. A large number of persons were present from various other part 3 as well as local settlers. All seemed on pleasure bent, and enjoyed themselves fully. Excellent provisions had been provided by our lady friends, which I were partaken of on the school premises, after which the children of the Te Mata district school held their annual races, with the following results :— Boys' Race, over 12 years : R. McCracken, I 1; W. Billington, 2. j Girls' Race, 0 to 12 years : S. Phillips, 6yds, 2; A. Billington, 2. Boys' Race, 9 to 12 years : J. McCracken, 1; R. Nicholson, 2. Girls' Race, 6to 9 years : L. Mold, 1: E. Billington, 2. Boys' Race, 6 to 9 years : F. Phillips, 1; R. Vernon, 2. Old Beys' Race : E. Jerome, 1; J. Nicholson, 2. Steeplechase : R. McCracken, I; W. Billington, 2. Children's Race, under 6 years : B. Billington, 1; G. Mold, 2. Kangaroo Race : W. Phillips, 1 ; R. Miller, 2. Hop, Step, and Jump : R. McCracken, 1; J. McCracken, 2. Steeplechase : W; Billington, 1; R. Nicholson, 2. Consolation Race: W. Vernon, 1; R. Billington, 2. In all the races the children ran well, and each race was well contested. One thing was very observable by those present, the large number of young people in the district. Those attending the Mata School number between 50 and 60. The present able teacher is Mr. McPhorson. After the children's races were concluded, the company present engaged in numerous games during the afternoon and evening. At night the day's proceedings concluded with a dance in the schoolroom, all separating after spending a most happy day.— Correspondent.]
