BUTCHERS' PICNIC.

The picnic of all connected with the butchering trade, held at Motutapu yester- j day, turned out a most successful affair in every respect. Two steamers were engaged to take the excursionists down, one leaving the ferry tee at nine a.m., and the other shortly after ten. It is estimated that there were considerably over a thousand people present. Hunter's band was in attendance, and provided music throughout the day, and was also in request for the dancing and singing indulged in on the homeward trip. In addition to the sports specially provided, the visitors amused themselves with games of all sorts, the weather being splendid. The last boat arrived in town about nine o'clock. The following are the results of the raccs :Hurdle Race : J. Brain, 1; F. I). . Partridge, 2. Maiden Kace: W. Brierley, 1; E. Wyley, 2. 150 Yards Open Handicap : S. Goodman, 1; M. Conway, 2; F. Wilson, 3. 150 i'ard Butchers' Handicap : W. Brierley, 1; J. Brian, 2 ; McGuinness, 3. 150 yards Master Butcher's Race : H. Moody, 1 ; McKeever, • 2; 11. Sandall, 3. 440 yards Handicap: W. Carter, 1 ; E. Wyley, 2; J. Hewitt, 3. Three-legged Race: J. Braurul and C. Renner, 1 ; F. Parsons and F. Bust, 2; F. Gordon and G. Moore, 3. Slaughtermen's Handicap: Marshall, 1 ; J. Brain, 2; XV, Verron, 3. 300 yards Handicap: J. Brain, 1 ; E. Wyley, 2 ; F.vParsons, 3. Cigar and Umbrella Race : W. Ryan, 1; W. Verron, 2; Stewart, 3. Married Women's Race: Mrs. Slater, 1; Mrs. Corbett, 2; Mrs. Young, 3. Special race for young ladies : Miss Reach, 1 ; Miss Partington, 2; Miss Smith, 3. One Mile Handicap: W. Avenell, 1; J. Neill, 2 ; W. Town, 3. Putting the Ball : McMillan, 1 ; Kent, 2. In the 100 yards race between Messrs. Nor grove and Bust the former won, but Mr. Bust won in the 75 yards race between himself and Mr. Tyndall. There was to have been a prize for the best looking woman on the ground, three bald-headed gentlemen to act as judges. These, however, owing to the large number of Indies, who ' all seemed equally deserving of the award, could not come to any decision, so the matter had to be left alone.
