THE GOLDFIELDS.

[by TELEGRAPH. 0 CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. Sharemarket. — Cambria, 2s lOd, buyers 2s lOd ; Caledonian, sellers Is 9d; Dives, sellers Is 9d ; Moanataiari, sellers 10s 6d ; Alburnia, sellers 2s 8d ; Norfolk, sellers Is lOd ; Orlando, sellers Is Id Saxon, 6s 3d, buyers. 6s ; Trenton, sellers 2s 9d ; Victoria, sellers Is 9d ; VVaihi, 30s, 335, sellers 335. Dives.—The crushing of 16 loads general dirt was completed to-day for 390z 16dwt melted gold. This added to 113ozs 6dwt gold obtained from 671b picked stone crushed a day or two ago brings the total return up to 1530z sdwt. which is a very satisfactory one. Saxon. —There was no falling off in the water at No. 6 level to-day, it remaining about the same height as yesterday. The only work now proceeding in the mine is cleaning out ana repairing of 4 Mo. 3 level, with the object of driving to intersect No. 1 footwall leader, east of No. 2. Victoria. —A nice-looking 4-inch leader has been intersected in the company's crosscut, but as the country at the back of it has become somewhat firmer, the contractors have thrown up their contract, after having driven only 30 feet out of 200 feet they tendered for. Fresh tenders are now being invited for the work.J Moanataiari.—Owing to one of the joints of the County water mains giving way this morning opposite the company's battery, whilst Messrs. Price Brothers were taking measurements for making connection with the new Pelton wheel, the battery was at a standstill for the remainder of the day. This will necessitate putting off the monthly return until the commencement of next week. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Little Nell.—The rise on reef is up 7 feet, but as it does not improve I have stooped it. and confined the work to the drive on the hangingwull leader, which is now in 27 feet. This leader is small, but as I have seen gold in a stone or two, it is better to push it ahead and discontinue the rise, so as to ascertain its worth as quickly as possible. Pride oP Karaka.— drive has been extended a further distance of 16 feet, making a total of 307 feet. During the past week the country has been a little better for driving, being composed of a hard blue sandstone. Magnolia. The lower level was extended last week IS feet, making a total of 900 feet. The sandstone is still hard, but very favourable for gold, and the same class of sandstone as we have in the winze. I expect to cut No. 1 Excelsior lead in the lower level this week. No. 2 Excelsior lead is what the winze is sunk on, and it is quite possible that No. 1 and No. 2 will junction in the lower level. No. 2 level: We broke down in the winze last week and we saw colours and dabs of gold right through it from one end of the winze to the other. Dives.— reef in the back stope above No. 2 level has been broken down for a length of 22 feet, all the favourable indications of which I informed you in my last two reports have been fully maintained, and 351b of picked stone, as wired, was selected from the general dirt. In the stope below 10 feet of the reef has been broken down, and although no picked stone resulted gold has been seen very freely all through the quartz. In the crosscut on main flinty the men, after driving an additional 13 feet, completed _ their contract, and there is no change in either country or seam. The repairs to the main winze are not yet completed. Crushing is proceeding at Bull's battery. There are 16 loads of gene- | ral dirt and 671b of picked stone to put 1 through. . . ; Victoria.— crosscut is again passing i through a tight sandstone country, and seve- • ral small quartz and mineral veins are crossing the face of the drive, and from the appearance it is very probable a reef is close at hand. The contractors are making slow pro--1 gress. The following telegram was received from the mine manager yesterday :—Cut leader six inches thick; splendid mineral , indications. v " ' ' Prosperity. men have been driving i on the loaders in the footwall of the break in Savage's level, •which is now in a distance , of 11 feet, passing through a solid white sandstone country, of a first-class description. By continuing this drive 20 feet further we i should intersect the Prosperity reef in the , foot all of the break according to survey. I have been carrying on a surface drive as mentioned in my last, which has been driven 30 feet through brown blocky sandstone country. We nave cut three leaders ' varying from two to four inches in thick--1 ness, but which showed no gold in cutting through. .
