BANKRUPTCY.
DEBTOR'S EXAMINATION. In his deposition before the Official Assignee yesterday James Black made the following statement: — came to the colony about ten years ago with £18,000 in cash. Ih June, 18S4, I considered the greater part of my investments were sound, and good for the money laid out. A revaluation of my securities on the Ist of June, 1886, still disclosed a satisfactory position. Amongst other investments I took up shares in the Miranda Coal Company and the Auckland Brick and Tile Company. In addition to paying calls in full on these companies' shares, I became guarantor in conjunction with other shareholders for £7500 and £6000 respectively to certain mortgagees of the companies' assets and a bank overdraft of £5000. The guarantors have already wiped off the overdraft and £2000 of the £6000 on the Brick and Tile Company. My contribution towards these payments consisted of £1920 worth of securities and £700 in cash. My losses, approximately, during the last three years have been as follows :— Bank shares, £800; mortgages, £650; shares (including the Miranda Company and the Brick and Tile Company), £2550; Brick and Tile, for guarantee and advances for working expenses, £3620; Sydney syndicates, £4800: total, £12,420, and others of minor amounts, exhausting the whole of the capital 1 brought to the colony ten years ago. I will produce my records of transactions since 1884 at the first meeting of creditors. The only available assets consist of the. household furniture and effects, a horse, buggy, and two boats, and altogether worth about £100. The house and ground at the Lake were settled on my wife six or seven years ago, and the deed was registered about five years ago. I have no other property or interests, beyond what is disclosed in my schedule. My liabilities amount to £12,090 16s 7d, all unsecured.
