In addition to the new island steamer mentioned yesterday for the Samoan trade, the Union S.S. Co. are constructing a second vessel of similar dimensions for the Fijian service, which is to be called the Ovalau, from a district near Levuka. The name of the other packet is not yet decided, but the local manager of the company has suggested an appropriate cognomen in Apolima, a historic islet in the Samoan Group. The barquentine Waitemata and schooner Welcome are berthed at the Railway Wharf discharging their Newcastle coal. The schooner Olive is not likely to leave port again for several weeks, as she will await here the end of the island hurricane season.

After her bumping on the Opotiki bar, the schooner Fleet wing has gone up Mr, Niccul's slip at the North Shore lor repairs. In a clipping from a Sydney paper yesterday it was mentioned that the s.s. laviuni had put up the smartest record between JLevuka and Suva— 50mins. Captain G. Crawshaw, of the s.s. Wainui. informs us ' that the s.s. Penguin did the trip in 3hrs '40mins, and the s.s. Arawata in 3hrs 35mins. The assumption of the Taviuni's making the record is apparently premature. The Union S.S. Co. received a cable to the effect that the s.s. Mararoa had sailed from Sydney last night for this port. The Fijian steamer Taupo left port yesterday evening for Levuka and Suva with a large general cargo and several passengers. The discharge of the ship Leading Wind is proceeding satisfactorily. Yesterday the s.s. Kotomahana went into dock for repairs to her broken shaft. The tug-boat Awhina is receiving an overhaul to her deckhouses, etc., at Queen-street Wharf. The Awhina is under offer for sale

to a Sydney firm, but negotiations are not yet concluded. The Auckland-owned barque Northern Chief arrived in port at midnight with a cargo of coal, etc., from Newcastle, consigned to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company. Captain Mackay reports having sailed from Newcastle, on January 21, at 11) a.m., passed North Cape at 10 p.m. on the 2nd February, and Tiritin at 10 a.m. on the sth, variable ■winds prevailed throughout the trip.

H.M.S. CURACOA. After about two months' absence from our Waters, H.M.s'. Curacoa returned yesterday from a trip round the chief Southern ports, during which her officers and crew have improved their , acquaintance with ]Slew Zealand, with agreeable results. The Curacoa left this port on December 9th, reaching Lyttelton on the 13th. " A Merry Christmas" was spent there, and the port was left on January 5. Dunedin was reached next day, and after a week's sojourn the cruiser proceeded to the Bluff. On the 16th she was under weigh again, and a pleasant couple of days were spent in Preservation Inlet, and other sounds were to be visited, but very rough weather was experienced, the wind blowing a terrible westerly gale, and it was deemed prudent Jo make for iNelson. This port was reached an the 22nd, and next day the Curacoa left for Wellington. Here she stayed a week and then came on under easy steam for this port, arriving at about 2 p.m. yesterday, and anchoring off the Railway Wharf. Before entering the harbour, the Curacoa called at Port Fitzroy, in the Great Barrier, where the sfficers had some excellent fishing and shooting. In the outer gulf, too, torpedo practice was indulged in, the torpedoes being fired both from the ship at full speed and also from the boats, 'lhe ship's company is in excellent health, and after their recent sojourn on the African coast, appreciate the , .mildness of the New Zealand climate. The r Yuiser will be thoroughly repainted here, jd will stay about a fortnight.
