Some idea of the extent of the hog-pack-ing industry in Chicago may be obtained by the following particulars : —During the season lately closed Messrs. Armour and Co., the great packers, received at their establishment 3,847,300 hogs, compared with 2,973,361 in the same period last year. The firm reported that its total distributive sales for the year ending Ist. October reached the enormous value of £13,000.001). li' number of pigs killed during the season was 1,450,000 ; cattle, 65,000; and sheep. 350,000 The total ground area covered by their buildings is 50 acres, the total floor area i'-j buildings 140 acres, and the chill-room and cold storage area is 40 acres. The number of employes is given at 7000, and the aggregate of wages paid £700,000. The- 6 figures show to what dimensions a business may attain in the course of a few years.
