NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tile regular meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last night. Present: Messrs. G. Kent (Mayor), Whyman, Heron, Angus, Edgerly, Clayton, Randell, Lumpkin, Laxon, and Holmes. The Recent Fikk.—The secretary of the Fire Brigade sent in an account for £'.> 5s 6(1 for services of the brigade at the fire •which occurred on the morning of the 13th Last., in the Rev. H. H. Lawry's premises, Carlton Gore Road. A report on the fire was also received from Mr. Wilson, Fire Inspector, and the latter recommended the placing of a larger fire bell at the top of Carlton Gore Road. The account was passed for payment, and the report of the inspector was received. A Grievance.—J. Brown, contractor, wrote stating that he had- tendered for the contract for carting metal, but his tender, although the lowest, was rejected, and he asked to be officially informed why his tender was thrown out. Mr. Wbyraan moved, " That Mr. Brown be informed that the Council had accepted McDonald's tender." He did not see why the letter should have been sent, for Brown came and withdrew his deposit, and the matter was explained to him then. Mr. Angus seconded the motion, and it was carried. Asphalting. — Mr. W. W. WarnocU applied to have the footpath in front of the Royal George Hotel asphalted, and offering to pay half the cost. Mr. Angus moved, and Mr. Lumpkin seconded, " That the work be done on the terms named." The Town Clerk said that the Savings Bank trustees had made personal application to him to have the footpath in front of the bank asphalted, offering to pay half-cost; and Mr. Angus moved to have the work done, pointing out that they were adjoining properties, and the footpath had better be made as a whole. The motion was agreed to. Streets Committee.—The Streets Committee reported that they had visited Morio\y'street in regard to defective drainage, but, owing to a heap of metal 'being on the spot, they had to defer their report. In regard to the drainage of Alma-street they reported that the drain was a necessary work, and that it should be done when the Council was in a position to do it. The cost would be about £15 for labour. _ The report whs adopted, and on the motion of Mr. Holmes, seconded by Mr. Clayton, it was ajfreed that the work should be done, and tenders called for the labour portion of it. Sinking Fdnd Commissioners.Mr. Whyrnan gave notice to move at next meeting, " That Messrs. W. Morgan and George Kent be appointed Sinking Fund Commissioners for the borough." Railway-street.—Mr. Clayton gave notice to move at next meeting, "That Railvay-street be drained in the same manner as Alma-street." It was agreed that the Streets Committee should in the meantime visit the place and report to the next meeting of the Council.
