The Auckland agents of the Messagcries Maritimes Co., Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, notify elsewhere that the first homeward trip of the magnificent new steamer Polynesien, which has made such an excellent record recently, will begin from Sydney for the United Kingdom, via Marseilles, on February 27. Early yesterday the s.s. Southern Cross arrived from the East Coast, with general cargo and passengers. The contractor for raising the ship Leading Wind was carrying on operations yesterday, but the wet weather somewhat retarded work, and progress was slow. .Last evening the s.s. Clansman left port for her weekly trip to Russell and the North. She will return to port in time to run one of her popular excursions to Mahurangi Heads on Regatta Day. About 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon the Union S.S. Co.'s fine steamship Mararoa, Captain Chatfield, arrived with passengers and cargo from Melbourne and the South. The purser, Mr. R. McLennan, reports of the trip:—We left Melbourne Wharf at 3.10 p.m. on the 13th, cleared Williamstown at 5.20 p.m., and Port Philip Heads at 7.20 p.m. same day. Had fresh southerly winds across Bass' Straits, and arrived a.t Hobart at 5 a.m. on the loth. Left Hobart at 5.30 p.m. on the 15th, had light easterly winds and fine ■weather across, and reached Bluff at 6 p.m. on Sunday, the 18th. Left again at 5.50 p.m. on the 19th, and arrived at Port Chalmers at 6 a.m. on the 20th. Sailed from Fort Chalmers at 6.30 p.m. on the2lst, and arrived at Lyttelton at 6.55 a.m., making the run in 12h. 52m., wharf to wharf, the fastest on record. Our time from Otago light to Godley light was only 12h. sm. We left Lyttelton at 10.27 K.m., and stopped off Wellington Wharf at 53 on the 23rd. Time, llh. 2Cm., again breaking the record, so far as merchant ships we concerned. The run has been beaten by H.M.S. Orlando only. Moved on again at 10.50 a.m., rounded East

Cape at 5 p.m., passed;Cuvicr at 5.52 yesterday morning, and arrived at Auckland as above. From Port Chalmers had light northerly winds to Lyttelton, thence fresh northerly to Wellington. We had then fresh N.W. winds to Gisborne, and fresh N.E. winds and showery weather from that port to arrival.

Ater a considerable absence from the Waitemata, the barquentine Jessie, now in charge of Captain Mahon, arrived here yesterday from Lyttelton, with a full cargo of wheat for the "Northern Roller Mills. Her passage up was a stormy one, as a fierce gale was encountered on the 16th, one day after leaving Lyttelton. The wind blew with terrific force from the S.W., and a dangerous cross sea rose. The vessel was hove to, but several great waves broke aboard, one of which broke up one of the boats, and swept all the movables from the deck. The weather began to moderate on the 17th, and afterwards light and baffling winds were had to arrival. The Jessie was berthed at the Bailway Wharf.

Shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday the mail steamer Alameda took her departure from tins port for Honolulu and San Francisco, a large number of persons assembling, despite the rain, to sec her start. As the vessel had new propeller blades fitted in Sydney to replace those broken on the down trip, Captain Morse expects to make a smart trip. At Honolulu she is to pick up about 1000 tons sugar for San Francisco. Her freight from this port amounted to about 250 tons, comprising flax, gum, oats, potatoes, etc., while her passenger list was augmented by 45 of both classes. PORT OF ONEHUNGA DEPARTURES.
