CITY VALUATIONS.
The city valuations for the present year show a total increase of over £10,000 in five wards, the sixth, the Grafton Ward, alone showing a small decrease. The following are the figures, showing the present assessments and increases on previous year : — North Ward, £70,173, increase £39u6; East Ward, £97,746, increase £3283; South Ward, £49,008, increase £'2103; Graf ion Ward, £13,850, decrease £24; Karangahape, £22,074, increase £336; Ponsonby, £39,529, increase £859. Ponsonby Ward shows the greatest progress. The Assessment Court, which sits next month, may reduce these figures. There is a large increase to the assessment of the Auckland Gas Company. Its total valuation last year was £2666, while the total this year is £6225, distributed as follows :—North Ward, £2080 ; Ponsonby, £1518 ; South Ward, £950 ; East Ward, £1300, Karangahape, £217 ; Grafton, £160 ; making a total of £0225. The mains in several wards which were not assessed before have now been taken into Mr. Gulliver's calculations, hence the substantial increase in the assessment now shown. The annual valuation of rateable property in the city of Wellington for 1891 and 1892 is £313,102, being an increase of only £120 us compared with the previous year. The number of empty buildings in the city during December was 265, principally cottages of an inferior class. During the year 137 new buildings were erected. The rateable value of the borough of Oamaru this year is £36,196, an increase of £784 17s 6d compared with last year.
