PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

[by TELEGRAPH". —OWN correspondent]. Cambridge, Friday. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Piako County Council was held yesterday, at Morrinsville. Present: Messrs. W. P. Chepmell (in the chair), J. Horrell, W. H. Herries, J. Bailey, and E. W. Hanmer. Mr. Sondes submitted a report re Isaacs' Road. It was resolved to notify Mr. Isaacs of the work still required to be done before the Council can take the same over. With reference to th« proposed road through Mr. Isaacs' property, a letter was received from Mr. Hally, solicitor, giving particulars of title. It was resolved that the county clerk be instructed to ascertain whether the parties interested are willing to transfer the necessary land to the Queen. A letter was read from Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond, asking the Council to relieve their clients, Messrs. A. Clarke and J. M. Clarke of their liability in connection with the lease of the tramway. It was resolved to inform Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond that no application had been made by the present lessee for a transfer of the lease, and therefore the Council were not in a position to deal with the request. Mr. Gilfillan, in reply to a communication, from the Council on tramway matters, wrote stating that Mr. Adams, who has purchased the Silver and Gold Mining Company's interest in the tramway, would confer with the Council on the matter. It was resolved " That Mr. Gilfillan be informed that th Council do not know Mr. Adams in th matter, and still look to the lessees to carry out the conditions of the lease." The following gentlemen were appointed to act as returning officers to hold local option and licensing elections : —Percy, Snewin (Te Aroha) and Frederick VorrelltWaitoa). The Te Aroha Town Board applied for a refund | of £4 paid by the Board to the county as ; their proportion of the salary paid to the clerk of the Licensing Committee. It was resolved " That the Town Board be informed that this Council being the local body having jurisdiction throughout the licensing district of Te Aroha, it is the only body authorised to pay salary to the clerk of the Licensing Bench, therefore they cannot recognise the Board s claim to a refund." Mr. C. Rigg requested the Council to make, an application to the Survey Department for a road to his property at Rangatunuku. Deferred until the Council devise a scheme of roads for that part of the district. A letter was read from the chairman of the Tauranga County asking Piako to join in an application to the Government for a grant towards making this road fit for wheeled traffic. It was resolved, "To inform Tauranga that Piako is not at present prepared to move in the direction indicated." Mr. James Hume wrote re his previous application for an alteration in the existing line of the Oxford-Cambridge Road, where the same runs through his.. property, and offering to pay the cost ot closing the present road, and dedicating the new one; also offering £10 towards making the proposed new road. Deferred till the chairman has inspected the roads in that district. The Bank of New Zealand Estates Company wrote offering to give two acres of land out of the Lockerbie estate for a cemetery. Accepted with thanks. Messrs. Chepmell, Horrell, and Hanmer were appointed a committee to arrange for a site, and to survey the same. It was resolved to expend £5 on road improvements on section 53, block 11, Te Aroha. I'he following applications for renewal of slaughterhouse licenses were granted :—D. Scally, Matamata; F. Marshall, Morrinsville; J. Wood, Te Aroha; A. Cornes, Te Aroha ;H. Baskerville, W aiorongomai. Mr. McLiver wrote asking the Council to improve the bridge on the hill track and crossing at Diamond Gully. It was resolved to authorise four culverts, not to exceed £18 3s; bridges ditto, Diamond Gully, £10. Captain Bailey was authorised to employ a surfaceman on the Cambridge-Oxford Road, for a term not exceeding three months, and at a cost not exceeding £30. The Taotaoroa Road Board wrote asking the Council to erect a drinking trough near Cudworth's farm ; also that Bruce's Hill, on the Cambridge-Tauranga Road, be gravelled before winter. It was resolved to erect a trough, at a cost not to exceed £3. No action taken with regard to Bruce's Hill road. The sam of £20 was authorised to lie expended on the Te Aroha-Lichfield Road through native reserve, Waiharakeke, such sum to include £15 12s, unexpended native rates. It was also resolved to spend a sum not exceeding £30 in improving this road near Shaftesbury, and a further sum of £20 in forming and repairing the road. Captain Bailey was authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £8 on the Cambridge-Taupo Road, between Paeroa aud Waipa blocks. Mr. James Shines' tender of £96 2s for work on the Oxford-Matamata Road was accepted, the other tender for the work being £130 15s 6d, by George Walker. Mr. J. HT Emett's tender of £2 for wire rope at Waiorongomai was declined, and the chairman was authorised to dispose of the same to the best advantage. A sum not exceeding £2 was authorised to be expended on the Te ArohaEatikati track.
