NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

THIRD DAY'S FIRING. McCALLUM WINS A MATCH. AUCKLANDERS WELL UP FOR THE BELT. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Thursday. The weather for the third day of the meeting was glorious, the light being, if anything, too bright. A gentle breeze was blowing down the range, but the day was one on which good shooting might naturally be looked for. The sun was, however, oppressively hot, *»* umbrellas and , other means of affording temporary shade on the range were greatly iti request. The Ladies' Match had been advertised to come ofl during the afternoon, and as it was a bank holiday in the town there wore a large number of visitors at the camp and on the range.

The men were paraded for the Nelson Match at half past seven a.m. At the last meeting this event, which allowed of seven shous at 500, t>oo, and 700 yards, was known as the Exhibition Match. It counts for the Champion Belt, and is the first match counting in the aggregates for the Union Steamship Company Cup. The first two ranges wwe concluded at half-past eleven o'clock a.m., but it was decided not to go on with the long range till half-past one o'clock. Private McCarthy, Victoria Rifles, scored the first " possible" of the meeting with 33 at 500 yards. Parslow was second at the range with 34, his first shot being centre, and all the rest " bulls.' . Lieutenant Eales whose performance in this match was watched with considerable interest, owing to his reputation as a marksman, end the fact that he carried oil Union S.S. Co.'s Cup last year, put together S3 at the first range. Coins: back to the next range, McCarthy, contrary to expectations, went to pieces. Hβ opened with a " bull " and an inner, then had two misses, and next two outers, finishing up with a miss. Parslow did fairly well at 600 yds, making 'J7. The top scorer at this range was," however. Kobillinrd, Kaiapoi, with 31 ; Taylor, " A " Battery, and Ross, Napier, coming next with 30" each. Ross, who had 32 to .his credit from the Bhort ranees, had a lead of one for the two distances, bat he broke down at the 700 yd?, where he only totted up 11. Mr. Sloane, Xarrawonga Rifle Club, headed the list at 700 yds with 29; Wakelyn, Christchurch," made 28 ; and Eales and McCalluin, "O '• Battery, 27 each. The two last mentioned tied for first plane, but on classifying the shots, MeCallutn took the money, as he had 27 to Eales , 28 at the 000 yards. Kruse, who gained third position with S5, made 33, -0, and "20 at fehe respective ranges. Sloane, Robillinrd. nnd Randall, who had been firing very consistently daring the day, each had S4 to his credit, and fell into the next -position. At 700 yards several of the gooi shots were ill astray, and misses were of very common occurrence. Most of those who fell suddenly away, attributed their failure to the dazzling light. At the Wingatui meeting last year, the score of 89 took the first prize in the Exhibition Match. The following are the prizewinners : — Match.—soo, 600. and 700 yds, seven shots at each distance. This match counts for both the Championship and Union S.S.

The firing in the Ladies' Match commenced about four o'clock, and the last squad was off the ground at half-past five. This event, which wa3 ten shots at 200 yards, counted in the aggregates for the belt, but not in those for the Union Company's Cup. The ammunition used at the meeting has so far given every satisfaction, the competitors being enthusiastic and nnanimous in its praise. It is the same nerved out to Imperial troops, and comes from the Government factory at Enfield, near London. Up to the present not a bad cartridge has been met with. The new system of counting " sighters" is very popular. There will be a church parade on Sunday in town, as on that day the volunteers in camp will go into Napier. The number of entries is now increased to 202. At the conclusion of the Ladies' Match, Wakelyn, of Christchurch, was still at the top of the aggregate list, with a lead of four from King, Oamaru, who kept second place. Webster, "A" Battery, Auckland, who stood fifth at the finish of the Nelson Match, came up into third position, McCallum, of " O" Battery, being at his heels. Perry, Alexandra, who held third position on the list, only put on 41 in the Ladies' Match, thua allowing Mr. Sloane, Yarrawonga, to pass him with one point to the good." White, of Auckland, fell from fourth to eighth place; but Weir, Thames, put on 46, and advanced a few steps. During the day, Williams, of Wellington, and Tiffen, of Gisborne, who had held sixth and seventh places respectively at the close of yesterday's shooting, fell away considerably. Hay, Auckland, came up very well, and Parslow also gained several places. The following are highest up to finish of Ladies' Match.

[BY TK.r.EGKAIMi. — OWN" OORKKSPOKDENTJ. Napier, Thursday. Bombardier Doughty and Volunteer Kelly, of "A" Battery, and Sergeant So-ill and Petty Officer Spinley are unwell to-day, bur hope to be all right to-morrow. Lie" Haultain is not shooting to-day, being called to Napier on business. We, that is, the Auckland contingent, are a very happy family at Greenraeadows, Taradale, and the drive to and from the camp is n»o.«t enjoyable. Webster, White, and McCallum are shooting splendidly, and we consider White has a good chance for the Belt. McCallum made the possible in the Nelson Match at 500 yards, and though he broke up at the final he still got first prize. Hay and Henderson are improving their positions every match, and will be very close at the finish. The shooting in the ladies' match, won by Lieutenant Ross, was very good, and it will be seen by the scores that all the Auckland men are well up. The Aucklanders who did not tnke prizes in the Nelson match were :—Taylor, 74 ; Greenshields, 72; Skinner, 71 ; Kelly, Weir, Craig, 68 ; McCarthy, Shepherd, 66; Cooper, 62 ; Doughty, 57 ; Osborne, 56 ; Tobin, 56 ; J.
