THE YACHT MARITANA.

[by telegram:.—FKKSS association.! Gisborne, Monday. The s.s. Australia passed the Auckland yacht Maritana at six o'clock last evening ofF Portland Island. She was running with a fair wind, and wished to be reported " all well." It is supposed that the Maritana sheltered under Mahia Peninsula during the late gale.

A Melbourne paper has the following about the sisters of the Governor of Victoria, the Earl of Hopetoun : —" By-the-•way, how the Ladies Hope have bounded into everybody's good graces ! On all sides their praises are-being sung, and it is no exaggeration to say that their good sense and amiability will do something to modify the contempt in which critical Australians have long held the English aristocracy. Titled visitors to these colonies have mostly been of the highly undesirable order, and it is quite a relief to have two representatives here who are likely to leave almost as pleasant memories behind them as the Countess of Aberdeen and the late Lady Brassey." There were two persons in the lock-up last evening for drunkenness, and one named Stewart for being drunk and guilty of assault. "Purify the blood, cleanse the stomach, and aweaten the breath, with Dr. Soule'a American Hop Bitters." 13 „
