THE POSTAL AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT.
THE EMPLOYMENT OF FEMALE LABOUR.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. I informed you in my last of a rumour in circulation to the effect that it was intended to employ sorno nineteen females in the Postal and Telegraph Department in addition to those already employed. Both the Postmaster-General and Mr. Grey, Secretary to the Department, give to this rumour an absolute denial. The Times says to-day that this rumour was to the effect that those women had been appointed. This of course is absolutely untruo. The fact is that extending over a period of 16 years there have not been more than 16 women employed altogether, and there arc very few now remaining. The Government naturally feel annoyed that upon the eve of their leaving office rumours of the above character should obtain circulation and credence. '
