SAD DROWNING CASE.
A very sad occurrence took place on Wednesday last at Whangaparoa, whereby a man, named Charles Lingard, cook on bo ird tho cutter Mana, lost his life by drowning. The cutter was bound for Whangarei, but owing to a head wind was constrained to put in at Whangaparoa and anchor there. There being nothing to do but wait, two of the crew—Lingard and William Policy—put off in a small dingy for the shoro to see if they could not gather a few oysters. While in the midst of this occupation Pelley noticed that the dingy had got adrift, and called his mate's attention to tho fact, whereupon the latter took off hi 3 boots and part of his clothing and swam after it. Ho followed it for some distance, but at length, giving up all hope of recovering it, he turned round and swam for the shore again. He, however, almost immediately sank, and no trace of him has since been discovered. When deceased disappeared ho was only about twenty yards from Policy, and the cutter was about a quarter of a mile off. Deceased was about 43 years of age.
