COUNTRY NEWS.

[FROM . OUR • OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Hamilton, Wednesday. The Tuesday half holiday does not seem to work well amongst the shopkeepers, and is generally in disfavour with the public. On either _ side of the river yesterday one of the principal general shops was open all day, and in some others it only needed to knock to obtain admission, or to go round to the back of the premises. Byron's drama, "Blow for Blow," was performed last uight by some of our leading amateur? actors, in aid of the funds of St. Mary's Catholic Church, in the Public and Volunteer Hall. The building was crowded. The cast was as folio Sir H. Linden, Mr. Drury ; Charley Spraggs, Mr. Dalston ; Josiah Craddock, Mr. A. Connolly ; John Drummond, his clerk, Dr. Kenny ; Mr. Bolder, Mr. C. J. W. Barton: Mr. Kenward, Mr. Hume; Mildred Craddock and Alice Pdtherick, Mrs. W. Cussen ; Lady Linden, Miss Pain ; Kitty Wobbler, Miss Kate Jolly; Mrs. Moulsey, Mrs. Kenny. In the final scene, in Josiah Craddock's office in Portsmouth, Mr. Dalston asSpraggs, and Dr. Kenny as Druinmond, and Miss K. Jolly as Kitty Wobbler, and Mr. A. Connolly as Craddock, were deserving of all praise, and were ably sustained by others of the company. til the second act, Miss Kate Jolly and Mrs. Cussen as Alice letherick, and Lawrence Cussen as Dr. Grace, and Dalston as Spraggs, met with an enthusiastic reception from the audience, both Mr. and Airs. Cussen sustaining their respective parts with much ability. The acting of Mrs. Kenny as Mrs. Mousley was also excellent, and more than once brought down the house. The meeting in the streets of London between Spraggs and Kitty Wobbler, and in the second act where Dr. Grace discovers Spraggs passing himself off as a fine gentleman, were specially worthy of notice. Credit is due to Captain Reid for the general get-up of the stage and ball accommodation, and between the acts the Hamilton Band assisted as an outside orchestra. A sum of about £2.') was realised by the performance. What might hav-j been a serious accident, happened yesterday to Mr. Harry Hume, who was driving a spirited pair of horses. Coming down the hill from Dr. Kenny's, the pole-strap broke and the pole; dragged. The horses then became restive and bolted, and when opposite the Bank buildings, got off the road on to the grass, and the point of the pole catching in soft earth, suddenly stopped the buggy, which lurched forward, breaking the pole off. The horses got clear away and bolted up the street, taking the footpath for it, but going past Wynne's hotel, one took either side of one (if the verandah posts, and they were brought up by a round turn. Mr. H. Hume was thrown out when the buggy upreared, but was liot at all hurt. An old man named Robertson, belonging to Te Awamutu, was knocked down by the runaways, but beyond aifew slight contusions about the head and nice, was not injured. I Another bolt took place yesterday afternoon in East Hamilton. The spring cart), of Mr. Hobbs, of Tamahere, was standing outside Pearson's smithy, when something caused the horse to take fright, and it bolted alotag Grey-street and down to the bridge at\a gallop._ Mrs. Biggs and a lady were crossing the bridge in a buggy at the time, but selling the horse and cart coining at full speed, drew up to their own side, and quietly waited the result, and escaped accident. TliS horse was stopped after it had passed oven the bridge while passing through the narrow! fenced approach on the west side. I Ngaruawahia, Wednesday. ! As many of your readers are aware, the' cream from Messrs. Reynolds and Co.'s several Waikato factories is sent daily to this place, where it. is churned into butter. The quantity of milk treated at these factories is 3073 gallons per day, and the quantity is daily increasing. From the cream sent to the depot here more than half a ton of butter is made daily, and this, as it is made up, is sent to the freezing depot in Auckland. The Hamil-1 ton factory, which does the most business of any, receives 1053 gallons of milk daily, and sends 86 gallons of cream per day to be converted into butter at the factory here. Last season the butter was made in the several factories, but it has been found that a more uniform quality of butter can be made by mixing the cream here, and that the work can be performed better and cheaper.
