H.M.S. CURACOA.

The advent of a mnn-o'-war to our waters is always pleasing to the townsfolk, and many admiring comments were made yesterday concerning H.M.s. Curacoa by frequenters of the wharves. In the forenoon the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Upton) and Town Clerk (Mr. P. A. Philips) visited the warship, and were courteously received by Captain Stopford and officers. Concerning these latter, it will be interesting to many to learn some few particulars of their previous careers. Captain Robert W. Stopford was commander of H.M.s. Arab, and served during the naval and military operations in the Soudan, and with the Naval Brigade landed for the protection of Suakin, in March, 1884. He holds the Egyptian medal and the Khedive's bronze .star. Lieutenant Valentine David Hughes was Navigating Sub-lieutenant of H.M.s. Ringdove during the operations in the_ Malay Peninsula, Perak expedition of 1875-1870, for which service he received the Perak medal and clasp. He was lieutenant of H.M.s. Humber during the operations in Eastern Soudan, at Suakin, 188-1-1865, and received the Egyptian nieda (Suakin, 1885), clasp and Khedive's bronze star. Lieutenant Cecil G. Treherne was a midshipman on board H.M.s. Shah dur ing the engagement with the Peruvian rebel turret-ship Hmscar, off the town of Ylo on the 29th of May, 1877. He was also Sub-Lieutenant of the H.M.s. Temerairc during the Egyptian war, 1883, ivnd holds the Egyptian medal and Khedive's bronze star. Lieutenant Vernon Maud was Sub-Lieutenant of H.M.s. Decoy during the Egyptian war, 1882, and holds the Egyptian medal and Khedive's bronze star. He was lieutenant of H.M.s. Cygnet during the operations in the Eastern Soudan at Suakin in ISS4-5, and received the Suakin clasp. The Chief Engineer, Thomas Morris, was assistant engineer of H.M.s. Ringdove during the operations in the Malay Peninsula, i'erak expeditions of 1875-70, and holds the Perak medal and clasp. The StaffPaymaster, Augustus H. Brigstocke. was clerk of H.M.s. Sultan at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11th .July, 18S2, and during the Egyptian war, and holds the Khedive's bronze star. Boatswain E. Coveney was boatswain of H.M.s. Malabar during the Egyptian war, 1882, and has the Egyptian medal a. Khedive's bronze star. He was also boatswain of H.M.s. Euryalus flagship during the operations in the Eastern Soudan, at Suakin, in 1881, and has the Suakin clasp.
