WAIKATO.

Hamilton', Tuesday. It appears that after all there is to bo a contest. A Mr. W. C. Castle ton, a Hamilton 'settler, and formerly a schoolmaster under the Board of Education, has announced his candidature in the local paper, and the days on which he will address the elector;* at the several centres. Mr. Castleton will be remembered as the gentleman on whose farm the saurian monster made its appearance some years ago. It is also understood that Mr. J. B. Tcasdale, of Te Awamutu, will eater the Hold at the request of his friends. .

BAY OF ISLANDS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Russeij,, Tuesday. Mr. J.-Lundon addressed a large meeting at the Public Hall last night, and received a unanimous vote of thanks. It was an able and straightforward speech, and impartial judges consider that, after hearing the four candidates, they must pronounce Lundon's speech os the best. He will, in con?o----quence, secure many voters who were wavering.

EASTERN MAORI ELECTORATE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Rotokca, Tuesday. Mr. James Carroll, one of the candidates for tho Eastern Maori electorate, addressed a meeting of natives in the Pukeroa Hall last night. The proceedings were of a lively description, and lasted fully three hours, many nappy retorts being exchanged between the candidate and several questioners, in tho matter of taxation of native lands. The support given by Carroll has raised an adverse feeling against him, especially amongst the old Maoris, who have no desire to conform to European ideas. Although there are live candidates in the field tho contest is virtually between Carroll and Wi Fere, both of whom will remain here until the polling day. Considerable excitement prevails, both parties working hard. Te Kooti, it is said, will send a large number of natives from Otema to vote for Wi Fere, who, it is thought, has the beat show.

In our advertisement columns will be found the address presented to Mr. J. M. Shera, requesting him to becomo a candidate for the City, and Mr. Shcra's reply. We understand that before giving an answer to the requisition that he should stand, Mr. Shera waited upon Sir George Grey. He told him how matters stood, and asked if Hit - George would not reconsider his determination not to stand, as in that case he (Mr. Shera) would not come forward. Sir George's reply was quito decided, that he thought no friend of his could press upon him to take any part in public life at present. It is notified in the Gazette of November 20 that the Public Hall, Mararetu, was appointed among tho polling places for the Alarsden district, but- that Mr. Hewlett's house, Mararetu, is the place which should have been appointed as u polling place.
