AUCKLAND COLLEGE AND GRAMMAR SCHOOL GOVERNORS.

The Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School met yesterday. Present : Sir 0. M. O'Rorke (presiding), tho Rev. C. M. Nelson, Colonel Ilaultain, Messrs. Upton (Mayor of Auckland), Lennox, Luke, Toie, and Professor Brown.

Tun Board's Leasehold?.An application was received from Mr. Tomlinson, of the Exchange Hotel, Parnell, for the reduction of the rent of the lease held by him from the Board. It was pointed out that the Board had not the power to grant the request, as they had nob brought the Public Bodies Leases Act into operation. Jt was proposed when that power was obtained the rent should be reduced to £5 per week for five years, the tenant to pay rates and insurance fees. Mr. Upton objected to the motion, because lie thought it would be wrong for the Board to bring the Act into operation at he present time. Ho thought there would be many applications under the Act which it would be very difficult for the Board to agree to, and he did not think the present case was especially hard compared with other cases of tho Board's leaseholds. He considered the light course would be to accept a surrender of the lease from the tenant, and that it should be offered for sale by auction, when the Board would ascertain whether the property was worth £5 a week, or more or less. Before bringing tho Act into operation, the Board take into consideration the question of their expenditure, because they could not continue tho present scale of expenditure unless their income was tolerably well assured. If the lease were offered by auction, the tenant would be perfectly able to compete as well as anybody else. Colonel Haultain agreed with Mr. Upton. Ho thought they would be doing wrong in bringing '.heir properties under the opera ion of tho Act Die motion was carrier... and it was also resolved to take steps to bring into operation tho Public Bodies Leases Act, for the purpose of giving effect to the resolution.
