Yesterday the ship Zealandia's crew were busily engaged bending her sails, and as the vessel has just about completed her lading of general colonial products for London, she will likely clear and sail during this week. At the Railway Wharf the barquentine Cuthona is having necessary repairs executed to her spars before starting loading. I The Union S.S. Co.'s regular East Coast trader Southern Cross reached port from her numerous places of call about 1.30 p.m. yesterday, bringing a large cargo, including .transhipments ex R.M.s. lonic, and several passengers. She left Wellington on the 19th fnst. and called at her usual ports, experiencing variable weather throughout the trip. The Union S.S. Co.'s steamer Oreti, which has been for a considerable time jperforming the inter-insular service in the Fijian Group, but is now to be superseded by the as. Maori, is to leave for this port on the 26th instant, and may be expected here on or about December 4. The Oreti will receive an overhaul at a Southern port before being placed in the coastal trade. The barque Northern Chief is to sail this morning for Mangonui, there to load timber for Sydney. About 10 o clock yesterday forenoon the brigantine Linda Weber left port for Tairua there to ship her cargo of timber for Adelaide. ~ . . ,j . . On the conclusion of the inward trip of the mail steamer Zealandia, upon which she started from San Francisco on the 15th hist., Bhe is to be fo.r the time being at least struck out of the list of mail steamers, and will return direct from Sydney to California, where she will be refitted and have new boilers, etc., put into her, after which she will be re-registered under the American flag. Her place is to be taken by the Union S.S. Co.'s fine new steamer Monowai, which is to leave on her first trip from Sydney on December 24th, calling here on the 29tn. _ The splendid accommodation and modern appliances of the Monowai render her eminently fitted for the ocean mail service, and we expect she will be

Port Chalmers, Monday. — The French warship Volta, Captain Hugnet, arrived this forenoon, and anchored below Port Chalmers. She was visited by Mr. P. C. Neil, French Vice-Consul, and the Mayo* of Dunedin. The Volta carries six 14-inch, six revolving, and one traversing guns, all of the most recent date. Captain Hugnet intends taking his vessel up to Dunedin.
