Burns] a candidate for Taieri, in the course of an address at Mosgiel, advocated the sale of the railways in order to pay the public debt. Acts of larrikinism are still being perpetrated in the suburbs. The police are doing their best to detect the offenders and Bheet the offences home. Speaking in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly the other night, a member performed the feat of telling five deliberate lies in eight lines of reported matter. How carefully the rolls are looked after ! Sir John Hall has lived for upwards of I thirty years in the Selwyn district, and found his name omitted from the roll. Information has been received of the death in Australia of the Rev. J. E. Kelly, who for a short time filled the pulpit of the Moray Place Congregational Church, DunBdin. The evidence taken in regard to the collision between the Britannia and Ruby, has been forwarded to the Marine Department. It is probable that there will be a public inquiry ordered. Mr. Nairn's run in Hawke's Bay, conFisting of 20,000 acres, is reported to have been recently leased for eight thousand a year. The property is estimated to carry fcfty thousand sheep, besides a couple of thousand head of cattle.
Mr. J. P. Spring has received a letter from Mr. F. Harper, now in London, in ■which the latter states that after a lot of trouble he has succeeded in securing the services of a professional cricketer for the Dnsedin clubs. His name is J. C. Lawton, Bod he is considered a fair all-round man.
The Melbourne Anglican. Cathedral, which has taken so many years to struggle upwards from its foundation has (according to the Melbourne Telegraph) now almost arrived at a stage in which, if not thoroughly completed, it may be at least useful. The building will seat 1750 persons, and is definitely announced to be opened on January 22 nd next. Information has bson received by the police authorities that a barn and stable belonging to Mr. Henry Wright, of Hunua, was recently destroyed, by fire. Mr. Wright nt the time of the outbreak was riding away from the place, and on looking back Baw it on fire. He rode back, and aided by hi? family saved a quantity of agricultural Implements. He was uninsured, and his loss is estimated at £200. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire.
