THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND MR. STEWART.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —From your report of the meeting of the Board of Education, on Friday last, it appears that a member of that body stated, that in a certain speech which I delivered her®, that I " made some remarks about salaries not being more than sufficient, and about there being no need to retrench further." These words you reprint in your sub-leader in the same issue, and found a portion of your article on the assumption that I used them. You will, in justice to myself, permit me to state :(1) That I did not either verbally or in substance say anything of the sort. (2) That I have not, from any public platform, made the slightest reference either to education or retrenchment. (3) That in the report ef the meeting in question, which appeared in your issue of the 23rd ultimo, the statement is not attributed to me. A reference to the Herald's files, and if necessary to the reporter's notes, will prove the truth of the above. I have further to add that the words quoted do not accurately represent my opinions, and that I am quito at a loss to understand why thsy should be credited to me.—l am, &c., Ralph D. Stewart. Onehunga, November 3.
