Occidental.—Twenty pounds of picked stone were obtained from the No. 4 stope east this morning. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Lone Hand.—The reef in the low level drive was broken down to-day at the point where the break joins the main reef and runs along with the reef. There is a splendid class of mineral in both the reef and the break, and the country is everything that could be desired for gold. Otama (Kuaotunuj.—The south crosscut is sti'.l in a nice channel of country. lam pushing this ahead in hopes to pick up another reef that is seen on the surface. No. '2 reef No. '2 level, going south : The country was a little better for a few shifts, but is now rather tight again, and the leader is pinched up to about six inches, but still carries a little gold and a lot of cinnabar, which I believe is a very good indication for gold in the Otama mine. Nemesis (Kuaotunu). The crosscut has been rather tight this last week an account of a big flinty cross reef coming in and running along the course of drive. We are now out of this, and better progress will be made. We will carry the drive along the hangingwall of the flinty, and any reef cut running into this we should drop on a run of gold. Monowai (Kuaotunu). —Since my last report I have extended the drive 15 feet. I have cut through the hard bar that came in and am now in a good class of sandstone country, and am able to make better headway, and if the reef I am driving for keeps its true course we should cut in about another "20 feet of driving, and if the country keeps as at present another week should see us in that distance and close on to the reef.

Stanley (Kuaotunu). —I have-traced the reef for a distance of 300 feet in the spur running north and south. lam putting in a tunnel east and west to crosscut it. We have driven 'JO feet during the week. The country is splendid sandstone, full of stringers and loose quartz, which indicates we are not far from the reef. I think it will be a large body of stone. I have tested the ore frequently, and find it all contains gold. A pood reef showing gold has been found in the Southern Star, about 100 feet from the Stanley boundary. Have taken the bearings of it, and find it will traverse nearly the whole length of our ground. I think it could be picked up in a week or two. But I should recommend to put on two more men. Pride ok THE Hills (Kuaotunu).—l visited your mine, accompanied by a man who showed me all the workings in the mine. Although there has been a considerable amount of driving done, there is little or no work done to prove the reefs. Near the Just-in-Time boundary there is a large reef that has only been opened on the surface for a few feet. This reef should be further prospected by stripping it along the surface in different places, when its value could be ascertained with very little expense. There i a also another reef about two feet through, farther east. This reef has only been cut. through in the mouth of a drive, the quartz has a very kindly appear - ance, and it runs through a favourable class of sandstone formation. This reef is worthy of further trial, and is well situated for surface prospecting, as the ground here is steep, and the reef could be opened on at different points, without incurring the ex-j>en-e of driving long tunnels, until the reefs are to a certain extent proven on the surface. There is so very little work done on the reef* in your mine that it is really very hard to form an opinion as to their value. Your ground is well situated, and from its jx>sition should be a valuable property. As there was was some doubt whether the Just-in-Time reef could go into your ground, I thought it advisable to ascertain its course, as near as possible, j before reporting to you. This I did by cutting a line one chain in length, where it was exposed, in three different places, in the Just-in-Time ground, and continuing the same line into the Pride of the Hills, and was very pleased to find that the line or reef runs through your ground, 69 feet east of the western |>eg on the Just-in-Time boundary, and should therefore traverse the whole length of your ground. This I consider a most imjKirtant fact. I would therefore recommend that a contract be let to intersect the line of reef, as there is a t innel in about '20 feet that we could utilise for this purpose. This tunnel would also intersect another reef before cutting the Just-in-Time reef. I would also recommend that one man be employed for proq>ecting on the surface, where it would be likely to find the Just-in-Time reef, and prospect the reefs beforementioned. Waikoa (Kuaotunu).-— The crosscut has been rather tight this week, but is now a little better in the face and of a nice class for gold. The trench on the eastern fall we carried down to our bottom boundary. We picked up a mullocky kind of reef about a foot thick with a few colours of gold in it. Ido not think this is the reef we have been looking for. I started further up near the top of the hill and picked up a leader six inches thick and carrying good payable gold. Where cut I intend tracing it along the side and go down and put in a crosscut and cut it about 40 feet deep. We should cut it in about 40 feet of driving. Hazklbank. —Four men are still employed in carrying forward a stope on the Young American lode. The lode varies in thickness from a foot to IS inches. In breaking it down gold is seen freely in the foot wall portion of it, and about 6lb of stone has been picked out of the quartz, which shows gold, but this cannot be classed as specimen. Fair progress is now being made with the crosscut drive at No. 1 level. Another eight or ten days should bring this drive into the Young American lode.
