THE AMERICAN TARIFF.

OPINION OF THE LONDON STANDARD.

Press Association Electric Telegraph.Copyright.

Washington, September 27. The McKinley Tariff Bill has been agreed to by a conference of the two Houses, and will come into operation on October 6th. Sugar, below No. 16, is to be admitted free ; above that, one half-cent, per lb.

London, September 27.

The Standard, in discussing the American Tariff Bill, declares it to be the most drastic protection measure in the world, and that as ten of the free Southern States have been so little considered, there is danger of a new secession. The Standard considers that the tariff will cause greater prosperity to the Australian tinned meat industry and New Zealand fisheries, and will also develop the profitable industries in Africa and Egypt, while it means commercial salvation to India.
