rgIHE CHURCH OF ENGLAND -I- GRAMMAR SCHOOL. THE lIEADMASTER'S REPORT For the Winter Term, 1890. The Term opened amidst general satisfaction, owing to the result of the Bishop's Prizes Examination, which had just been published. From the pass lists it appeared that more than one-third of the successful candidates belonged to this school, viz. Ist Gray, Kempt 3rd Hall, George I Senior Grade, f>th Hall, James f Class I. 9th Wynyard, James J .'(rd Stichbury, Charles } fith DeV'-reux, Humphrey ( Senior Grade, <Uh Snelling, Owen f Class 11. loth Frazor, William ) Ist Hammond, 11. } J ",'" r f *™ lo > ' ) Class 11. For a school of some forty boys, I respectfully submit that these results are brilliant, and I beg t< return my heartiest thanks to Mr. Smalllield, \vh( so ably led our boys to a great success ; to the boy: themselves tor that concentrated effort witliou which nothing worthy is to be won ; and especially to our old boys, Kempt Gray and James Hall, win came back once more to the scene of their formei victories to contend tor the renown of their ol< school. Who can doubt that boys that did so well at this examination, covering such a wide extent ol ground, will do equally well at purely secular ex animations V The matter will eoon bo put to a decisive test, for several of these boys are preparing for the Junior Civil Service and Matriculation examinations. Meanwhile, is it of small importance that boys are thoroughly grounded in the fundamentals of their belief '? If we are to judge by the loud wailing one hears over a "Godless education" it is not ; but, if we are to decide by the amount of practical support extended to this school by Church of England people, it must be a matter of small moment. Some persons may say that we sacrifice oilier subjects to impart so much religions knowledge. To that it ought to be sufficient to point out that two ! of our Old Hovs, viz. : - ' LEW IN SIIKPPAHD Anil ALFRED TURNER, passed the recent examination of the Board of Education, and are now teaching under the Board. Finally I beg to refer to the subjoined testimonials. They were unsolicited, and ought to bo conclusive ; but if they are not, then I appeal from the injustice of the present to the justice of the future, in the firm confidence that my boys will prove me right in the end, for the only final test of any system of education is the question " Does it produce good citizens?"— those who "Fear Gotland honour the king."
