COUNTRY NEWS.
[BY TKLEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton, Thursday. At a special meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, the new by-laws were confirmed. They come into force almost immediately. The election held to-day for the return of three councillors for the borough resulted as follows :—Slade, 84; Reid, 82; Bell, 77; Davey, 77; Qualtrough, 41; Salmon, 34; Chappel, 27. The returning officer gave his vote for Bell, and the three first were accordingly declared elected.
MAHURAIsGI. The weather during the past week has been splendid, and our roads ai-e fast drying up, with the exception of the bogs; which will take another week or two of sunshine and wind before the bottoms are reached. Farming operations are now in full swing, and lambs are plentiful. Considerable excitement has been caused in our township consequent on the heavy
rise in flour and all kinds of provißions, and the question frequently asked is, what win be the end of all the Unions and strikes *- [Own Correspondent.]
DAIRY FLAT. The Pukeatua Road Board held their monthly meeting in the Dairy Flat Schoolhouse, on the 6th of September. Present. Messrs. J as. Inglis (chairman), C. Jells, J.. Foley, and G. Green. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and connrmea, the following tenders were opened. JNo. I, two chains of road forming, and 13 chains ot ditching, three feet broad by two feet deep, and one pipe culvert 22 feet long, near Mr. 1. Moyle's. A. W. Thorburn, £1010s 6d_; R. L. Thorburn, £9 ss. No. 2, consists of six and a half chains long and one chain broad ot road to be cleared, stumped, and levelled, and four one half chains of road forming on the Black House Hill: A. W. Ihorburn, £5 10s 6d ; W. Jeffs, £5; J. Bawdeu, £3 7s 6d. The lowest tender in each case was accepted. A rate of Jd in the £ was struck on all rateable property in the district for the current year. The chairman reported that the road the Wade river residents desired opening out was too expensive a work to undertone, as it would take the funds of the Road Board for five years to accomplish. Mr. Foley from his inspection of the Kahikatea Flat Road, said a small bridge was necessary, about 14teet broad, to carry off the surplus water, lnis was agreed upon, and thus ended the business.—[Own Correspondent.]
