ELECTION OF COUNCILLORS.
KARANGAHAPE.
The election for one representative of the Karangahape Ward in the Auckland City Council was held yesterday at the Excelsior Hall, Newton. There were three candidates for the vacant seat—Messrs. J. Da vies (tho retiring member), J. Patterson, and H. T. Garratt. Mr. S. Brooking was the reburning officer, and superintended the proceedings, whilst Mr. John Tonar was the substitute returning officer, and Mr. Lee poll clerk. Mr. H. Mcllhone was scrutineer for Mr. Paberson, and the scrutineer on behalf of Mr. Garratb was Mr. Thomas Wigg. The contest was a very close one, and was carried on throughout the day with much interest. At a quarter to seven p.m., when about 70 people were present, the result of the poll was declared, as follows : — H. T. Garratb 147 J. Paberson 127 J. Davies ... ... ... 125 Mr. Garrabt was therefore declared elected. He returned thanks, and acknowledged the courtesy with which his opponents had contested the seat with him. He said that had he known that Mr. Pateraon intended to come forward, ho would not have been a candidate. Mr. Paberson thanked his committee and those who had voted for him. GRAFTON. For the vacant seat of the Graf ton Ward in the City Council there were two candidates, Messrs. J. M. Paterson and G. H. Powley. Mr. Paterson was the retiring member. The election was held at St. Sepulchre's Schoolroom, Symonds-street. In this case also Mr. Brooking was the Returning Officer, with Mr. W. F. Brooking as substitute. The poll clerk was Mr. Sbickley. Messrs. J. A. Paberson and N. W. Pollard were the scrutineers, the former for Mr. Paterson, and the latfcei for Mr. Powley. The following is the result of the contest: — J. M. Paterson 155 G. H. Powley 81 Mr. Paterson has therefore been re-elected. Thoro was ono informal vote. NEWMARKET. The result of the poll taken yesterday for the election of three councillors was as follows ; — George Heron ... 86 Walter Wesley Whyman ... 60 James S. Angus 57 F. G. Clayton 51 W. Kennedy 39 Of the 150 who are on the roll only 66 exercised their votes. The first three on the list were declared duly elected. ONEHUNGA. The election for three vacant seats in the Onehunga Borough Council was held yesterday at Onehunga. There were five candidates. The poll resulted as follows :— Daniel Hills 169 Edward Moonoy .„. ... 169 J. D. Shaldrick... .., ... 148 J. D. Jackson ».. , J)5 W. Shaldrick G2 The first three were declared elected. Mr. J. G. Hutchirison was the Returning Officer.
