SPORTING

THE DONCASTER ST. LEGER.

Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyrigkt.

London, September 10. At the Doneaeter Meeting to-day the follow* ing was the result of The St. Lboer Stakks of 25sove each. For three-year-olds : colts, 9st; fillies, Bst 111b. The owner of the second horse to receive 200sov8, and the third lOOsovs out of the

stakes. Old St. Leger course (about one

mile six furlougs and 132 yards.) 221 subs. Duke of Portland's br f Memoir, by St. Simon—Quiver 1 Duke of Westminster's br c Blue Green, by Cceruleue—Angelica 2 Mr. J. Gretton'e ch c Gonealvo, by Fernandez—Cherie -3 Memoir, with whom the Duke of Portland has scored a win in the St. Leger for the second year in succession, has proved herself a very brilliaut performer. As a two-year-old she started on six occasions, winning three of her engagements, viz., the Bradford Plate of 43650v8, the Zetland Biennial Stakes of SOOsove, and the Prendergast Stakes of 572e0v8. She opened her three-year-old career in the One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket in April last, in which race for some reason she was made the second string, the Duke of Portland declaring to win with his other representative, Semolina; and the manner in which Memoir had to be "reefed," to allow Semolina to win, gave rise to a good deal of talk and some pointed remarks, calling 'or the abolition of that absurd rule relating to declarations to win. At the Newmarket Second Spring Meeting, Memoir gave another exhibition of her smartness, by capturing the rich Newmarket Stakes of 6500sovb, in which race she was followed home by Blue Green and Le Nord ; and this success ehe followed up a little later on by a victory in the Oaks. In the Prince of Wales Stakes of 8500sovs, run at Leicester, however, she met her metoh in Surefoot, who defeated her by two lengths. The indifferent performances of Suretoot subsequently, however, caused him to fall into disfavour, and Memoir was installed favourite for the St. Leger, and she, no doubt, held that |K>eition throughout. Memoir was bred by Her Majesty, and she was purchased as a yearling by the Duke of Portland for 1500 guineas. As Sainfoin, the winner of the Derby was also bred by Her Majesty, Hampton Court has this year scored the unique record of having produced the two animals that have been victorious in the two great classic races. During last season the horses carrying the colours of the Duke of Portland piled up the great winning tota lof £73,858, and he will in all probability ugain distance all opponents in the matter of stakes won this season.
