CANON LIDDON DEAD.

Press Association.— Telegraph. —Copyright. [Received September 10, 8 p.m.) London, September 9. The death is announced of Canon Lyddon, from syncope.

The Rev. Henry Parry Liddon, D.D., D.C.L., Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, and probably the foremost living preacher of the English Church, was born in 1829. He became a student of Christ Church, Oxford, where ho graduated B.A. in 1850, taking a second-class in Classics. In 1851 he obtained the Johnson Theological Scholarship, and in 1853 proceeded to the degree of M.A. Having taken orders he was, from 1854 to 1809, Vice-Principal of the Theological College of Cuddesdon. He was also Examining Chaplain to the late Bishop of Salisbury. In 1864 he was appointed Prebendary of Major Pars Altaris in Salisbury Cathedral. Ho has been Select Preacher at Oxford (1863-65, 1870-72, 187779) and in 1866 he was Bampton Lecturer. From 1866 to 1875 he was a member of the Hebdomadal Council at Oxford. In 1870 he was installed a Canon Residentiary of St. Paul's Cathedral, and in the same year he yas. appointed Ireland Professor of the Exegesis of the Holy Scripture in the University of Oxford. At this period he was created D.D., and an honorary D.C.L. He resigned the Ireland Professorship in October, 1882, and is understood to be devoting the greater part of his time to a life of the late Dr. Pusey. Canon Liddon is the author of "The Divinity of Jesus Christ; eight lectures preached before the University of Oxford in 1866 on the foundation of the late Rev. John Bampton," Bvo, 1867 ; 2nd edition, 1868 ; 4th edition, 1869; Gth edition, 1872; " Walter Kerr Hamilton, Bishop of Salisbury," a sketch, reprinted, with additions and corrections, from the Guardian, 1869; " Some Elements of Religion," Lent lectures, 1870-72, Bvo. t 2nd edition, 1873 "Sermons preached before the University of Oxford," sth edition, 1873; and " Report of the Proceedings at the Reunion Conference held at Bonn, between the 10th and 16th of August, 1875 translated from the German of Professor Reusch, with a preface by H. P. Liddon, D.D., 1876. He has edited Bishop Andrevee' " Manual for the Sick," 1869, 1870, 1874; and, in conjunction with Dr. William Bright, " English Church Defence Tracts," 1872, &c. Canon Liddon was one of the most prominent and distinguished members of the High Church Party, his Easter Sermon (1885) having emphasized his position as the leading exponent of that school at the present time. He was a very popular preacher, and when in residence (during June and December) always attracted large congregations to St. Paul's. In 1888 he published a volume of sermons entitled "Advent in St. Paul's," and last year prefaced a new translation of Thomas h. Kempis' " Imitation of Christ." _______
