AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB.

- — - - - - ' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of tho Auckland Bowling Club took place on Saturday evening, at Robson's Rooms. There was a good attendance, considering the inclemency of the weather. The President (Mr. W. Gorrie) presided, and read the ANNUAL report 1889-00. The committee have pleasure in submitting the usual annual report and balancesheet for the season 1889 90. The large attendance of members, not only on regular clubdays, but throughout the week, is a very gratifying indication of the growing interest in favour of this game of bow Is as a pleasant and healthy means ot recreation. Inconsequence, however, of the many changes that have taken place during the past year the membership of the club has somewhat diminished, and the committee take this opportunity of urging upon members the necessity for using every ellort to recruit our numbers. Our green atYords ample accommodation for double our present number, and the game only requires to become better known to secure us a large accession of members. At last annual _ meeting it was resolved that a superintendent should lie appointed with lull powers to direct all operations on the grc-n and ground of the club. The committee were fortunate in inducing Mr. Mirlin to accept the otlice, and to him the club are indebted for the very satisfactory condition in which the green was put, and which enabled the club to open the season earlier than usual. Unfortunately Mr. Miriiu's business engagements compelled him to resign early in the year, but the efficient manner in which he had conducted the operations in the spring enabled the caretaker to keep it in good working order, under the direction of the president, during the remainder of the season. The secretary, Mr. Uennett. resigned his otliee in consequence of ill-health, Mr. Cameron, our treasurer, kindly consented to act in both capacities. To both Mr. Mirlin and Mr. Bennett the committeocouveyed the thanks of the club for their services. For the preparation of the green for the coming season the club is indebted to .M r. 1). Ross, who has taken the levels and is ready to do so again when required. On the whole, the committee arc satisfied that the green has been in better playing order this year than for a long time past, and 'they hope that with the constant care and attention which is given by the caretaker, it will be found to improve still further. A very enjoyable season was spent, and the Saturday afternoon matches, conducted as has been the custom of late years, have been much appreciated. Trophy Matches.--The matches for the club cup, champion bowls, and the several other matches for subscription and presentation prizes have been keenly contested, and have atlbrded additional attraction to members, and helped much to keep up regular attendance. It is gratifying to note that many new members have been successful in carrying oil prizes. The results of the contests are as follow :— Champion bowls, won by C. B. Kingswell ; club cup, J. I'aterson ; president's prize, •!. .1. Holland; Mr. Thomson's gold medal, .lames Scott; Mr. W. S. Jones'prize, W. Culpan : Mr. J. 11. Lyell's prize, .lames rater . Mr. W. Winks'prize, C. !>. Kingswell; Mr. Hardies prize (handicap), 1). W. Duthie ; Mr. I'at-erson's silver medals, Mcssis. K. i!. Garliek, G. Heron, I'. Oliphant, and W. Culpau (skip); subscription gold medals, Messrs. D. toss, J. 11. Hooper, M. MacdermoU, and A. W. Thomson (skip). Ct.t'l! Cl'P. — Mr. Oliphant having last year seem ed this trophy by winning it for the third time, kindly donated IT) towards the purchase of a new cup. This has been obtained, and is an appropriate and valuable trophy, and should be the means of inciting members to regular and careful practice. Visit to Smithkrn Provinces. — The hopes that were held out in last year's report of the prospect of teams visiting Dunedin to take part in the bowling contests held there during the Jubilee Exhibition season were not realised, mainly in consequence of our own .1 übilee celebrations in Auckland preventing representatives leaving here at that time. We were enabled, however, to send three teams to Wellington at Easter to contest with Napier for the Association medals, and to play other matches inaugurated by the Wellington club. Unfortunately our representatives were delayed on the voyage, and only reached Wellington in time to have one day's play. That one day, however, was siltlicitut to win the medal from Napier, and a match | with Wanganui, and to lose by a tew point ; | with Wellington. On the homeward journey I a in itch was played with New Plymouth on j their own green, and Auckland was for the first time successful in the encounter with i our " Plymouth brothers." The representatives from our club were Messrs. Frater, Boss. Miller, Macdennolt, Heron. I'aterson, (lorrie, 11 u'<lie, Olioliant, Humphreys, Cozens, Holland, and Payne. At this carnival there were I'ept eseut.iti ves from Nelson, Napier, Wanganui, Taranaki, and Auckland. All were hospitably entertained, and a cordial invitation was given to the several clubs to a carnival in Auckland next season. The committee commend this match to their successors, believing that interpfovincial matches I of this character do very much to inipro\e the | play flf individual members, as well as exI citing interest in the guile on the part of the i general public. j Finance. — I'l very effort has been made to keep down expenses. The income from all j sources, including balance of L'.Vi Is Jd trom I last season was t'lS!) Ms 7d, and the exp.-.ndi- ' t lire C 174 ."is Id, leaving a balance in hand of I £15 9s ::d. Li 111 1.111 l.s. — A -• you arc aware, the several mortgages, amounting in all to I'l.MO, mature I in December. The very heavy charge for interest is a serious drain, and lie committee would urge you to take steps to wipe mil ill is debt at any rate in its pre :eut shape. This matter should be discussed and the new committee instructed as to the course to be pursued in conclusion, the committee desire to thank the members for their hearty co- ! operation, and express the hope that the coming season may prove as enjoyable and satisfactory as the past one has been. — W. < ioIiKIE, President. Balance--,—The hon. secretary and treasurer (Mr. li. Cameron) read the statement of accounts: — Receipts; Balance I from last year, U.'Ci Is .'id; subscriptions, £! 10 lis; entrance fee*, co '2*; rent for tennis courts, £18 Os Id ; entries for matches, L'lN: total, £ I SI) J4*7d. Expenditure : Wages, interest,, miscellaneous, £174 os 4.1, leaving a credit balance in hand £15 Us :>d. Liabilities: Loans on mortgage, I*2oo. Assets : City freehold property, *2.( acres. The President explained hat though the balance in hand on face of account, was less than last year, there were sundry fees yet to be received which practically left the balance about the same amount as last, year. He moved the adoption of the report. Mr. Oliphant seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. Emotion or Okkk.t.rs. —The following oflicers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr. A. W. Thomson ; vicepresidents, Messrs. W. C. Mirlin and Jas. Prater, commit Messrs. W. Gorrie, W. North Island Bowi.inii Association.— It was decided to join this association as soon as organization completed, and withdraw from New Zealand Bowling Association, as there was little probability of an Auckland team meeting Southern bowlers | either at Christclmrch or Dunedin. j Prkskntatio.n of Tkoi'hiks and Pr:/ks.— The President in appropriate terms presented the trophies arid prizes to the respective winners: (dub cup, Mr. J. Patterson: champion bowls, Mr. KingsWell ; president's prize, silver-mounted fruit dish, Mr. .1. J. Holland ; gold medal, (presented by Mr. A. W. Thomson), Mr. J. guineas, ami Messrs. E. A. Mackeclmie, I'. Oliphant, Hardie, J. Patterson, J. J. Holland, K. Cameron, and W. Gorrio followed with a guinea each.
