THE GOLDFIELDS.

—*■ — - [FROM .OCR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Thames, Saturday. Norfolk.—Owing to the bad state of the road between the mine and the battery, it has been found almost impossible to cart quartz, consequently the staff of men in the mine has been reduced, and operations limited to driving eastward upon tho Star of California reef. . Saxon.—Tho new chamber at No. (J level has been completed, and to-day a start was made with the drive towards No. 2 reef, which should be to hand very shortly. Owing to tho winding engine having been utilised considerably during the week in the hauling' of mullock from tho new chamber, the usual supply of quartz for tho battery has not been brought to surface, consequently the fortnightly retorting on Tuesday next may possibly be a little under the average. May Quern. — The ventilation crosscut toward the drive upon No. 4 root is now in a distance of about 1(12 feet, and is passing through a good class of country. If all goes well during tin; next few days, the desired connection should bo effected with the No. 4 drive by the end of the week, when the manager will at once proceed with the extension of the drive upon the reef, and also commence sloping. When operations were suspended upon this reef, some time ago, excellent prospects were being met with, and there is every reason for expecting still bolter results as the works proceed. Two stopes are now in progress upon No. I reef, but as that body is of small dimensions, the crushing dirt is not accumulating very quickly, although what there is appears to boot" good quality, as colours of gold arc seen freely at every breaking down and a little picked stone obtained occasionally, Cambria.— The leader which is being driven upon from the crosscut lately opened up at No. 2 level is now very small, and is little morn than a formation of gritty quartz. No gold has been seen in it up to the present, although at times nice blotches of mineral have been met with. A few days ago a body of quartz was met with in the left hand side of the drive being put in upon the mineral vein from the stupes on the main reef below No. 2 level. Very little quartz lias yet been broken from the new comer, but from appearances the mineral vein should strike into it a few feet ahead, when it, is hoped something good will be found. The drive upon No. 7 leader at No. 4 level is still being pushed ahead, and during tho last fen 1 days an improved class of country has been met with. A small quartz seam was cut during the week, in which some nice colours of gold were seen, but the precious moral has not yet been noticed in the No. 7 loader itself. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Orlando.—The prospects of your mine have improved very much since my last report. New level : Sixty-two feet has been driven since starling. Only one shift of two men has been employed driving here ; they have averaged about 20 feet per week. The reef has become smaller and better denned, being only about eight inches wide. The sandstone country eneasing the reef is very promising for gold, and a little liao been seen through the quartz for the last 12 feet. It is heavily charged with copper minerals. I intend putting another shift on this drive to push it, ahead as quickly as possible. Piercy and party, contractors, have started the crosscut to intersect the Bendigo big reef, which work should be completed within one month from date.
