THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
* [BY TELEGRAPH. —PKF.SS ASSOCIATION. I Wellington, Saturday. Ik tho American subsidy to the San Francisco service is not granted that service will probably be abolished, as Now South Wales has declined to contribute .after the expiration of the present term. If, however, the former subsidy is obtainable the Government would probably send letters by the San Francisco route fortnightly at the reduced rate of Ihd, and discontinue) the direct service. On the other hand, if not forthcoming, the Government will endeavour to make satisfactory arrangements with the two direct companies for the carriage of mail matter at the reduced rates. The Postmaster-General has cabled to America the decision of the New South Wales Government re San Francisco service, and notifying that unless an assurance is given that the American subsidy will bo granted the New Zealand Government will be compelled to recommend the discontinuance of the San Francisco subsidy after November next.
