THE PENSION SYSTEM.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— interesting item of news from the seat of Government relates to the retirement (and pension) of Major Campbell, Clerk of the House. He has held one of the most lucrative in this overgoverned colony for thirty years or so, and now leaves with a pension, for the rest of his life, of, say, £460 a-year; and there are broad hints thrown out that further marks of honour should be bestowed upon him" meaning probably a seat in the Legislative Council—and the emoluments attached thereto ! It appears that Sir H. Atkinson (the Premier), Mr. Ballance (recognised leader of the Opposition), and Sir" John Hall (an ex-Premier), all united for the nonce to magnify the illustrious services of this sinecurist. Can anything show more clearly the viciousness of the whole pensioning system ?— am, etc., pq
