WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. Wellington, Friday. NATIVE DISTRICTS AM) THE RESIDENT MAGISTRATES ACT. There is a proclamation in the Gazette published this week which is desccrfag of some attention. It brings the Resident Magistrates Act (sections 105 to 115) into operation into the following native districts :— " Bay of Islands, Kaipura, Waikato, l'auranga, Napier, and Waipukurau." The following are the marginal heads of the sect : mis of the Act referred to:—(105) Native convicted of theft may be discharged upon paying four times the value of "the pro[>erty stolen ; (I0t>) value in certain cases to be awarded to the owner of the stolen pro;>erty ; (107) native assessors to be appointed for hearing such cases; (108) jurisdiction given to Resident Magistrates in settling disputes between natives, except in matters relating to land interests, will, or titles to property ; (109) jurisdiction in disputes between native and European, as the matter may stand, according to equity and good conscience ; (113) chairman of petty sessions to have the jurisdiction of Resident Magistrates. The remaining sections relate wholly to procedure.

Hawkeswood, Newmarket, has been accepted for this service from July 1, 1890, to 30th June, 1891, at 14s up to lOOlbs weight, 12s (id over IOOIbs weight.
