BOARD OF EDUCATION.
-annual meeting of the Board of Education took place yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. R. Udy (chairman), J. H. Upton, S. Luke, J. M. Lennox, J. W.Carr, and-R. Monk.
Chairman's Report.The following is the report of the chairman : —Aratiipu: Committee have been informed that change of assistant cannot take effect earlier than the Ist of August next. Okaihau : Committee have been asked to arrange for survey of site to be conveyed for Upper Waihou school. Pupil teachers'examination : Notice of examination, as subjoined, has been sent to pupil teachers, and to candidates for employment. Teachers' resignations : Miss Dunning, sewing teacher, Waitekauri. Miss Sarah B. Grey informed that she is to remain in charge of Brookside school until end of year. Leave of absence granted to a number of teachers through illness. Balances. —The balances this day are: Education fund, credit, £4976 3s 9d ; building fund, credit, £1744 19s 3d : total, £6721 3s. Girls' High School, dr., £19*2 7s 4d. Increase of Salary.Mr. J. J. Roche, clerk in the office of the Board, applied for an increase of salary. Mr. Monk expressed opinion that Mr. Roche was getting the average salary of clerks in his position. If the work was too much, a cadet should be appointed. He moved "That application be not entertained," Messrs. Lennox and Upton supported that view, while Mr. Luke thought that Mr. Roche was entitled to the increase, having served 10 years. Mr. Monk's motion was carried.
Appointments.—Pater an gi: Mr. W. H. Worsley ; Waimate, Mr. Bishopreak ; Kaitaia, Mr. J. Pelley; Taheke, Mr. W. Sim.monds; Te Aroha, Mrs. Oldham (assistant). Disputed Elections.Kaitaia : A protest was received against the election of the committee. It was decided that it stand over till the report of committee received. Lake : Mr. E. Harrow forwarded a protest against the election of the Lake School Committee, owing to the chairman refusing to allow a Chinaman, Henry Chong, either to be nominated as a member of committee, or to vote as a householder. A letter was also read from Henry Chong, respecting the same matter. The Board thought it was possible the chairman had committed an error in refusing the vote of the Chinaman, but there had not been sufficient ground shown for upsetting the election, and the result would not have been affected by the acceptance of Chong's vote. Mercury Bay : The householders having twice failed to elect a committee, the old committee were appointed school commissioners.
Establishment of Schools. — Kerikeri (Thames): It was decided to open a school in the district, and to endeavour to obtain the temporary use of the building indicated by the inspector. Kohukohu and MotuKaraka: To be combined as half-time schools for the present.. Mareretu and Paparoa (homestead) to be half - time schools for the present, in accordance with inspector's report. Waiote-Karamu : Decided to open a full-time school. Wayby and Wellsford : Correspondence deferred till next meeting.
Buildings.— Beresford - street: Request for verandah as shelter. Referred to Mr. Allright and the committee to consider the erection of a shed separate from the school rooms.
Grants.—Wellesley-street school: Application for repairs ; referred to Mr. Allright. Awitu : Application referred back to the committee, as it had the funds. Mount Eden : £10 for improvements, to supplement an equal amount by the committee. Grafton Road: Question of improvements to the school ground ; referred to Mr. Allright to report upon. Hunua : Bell granted. Mareretu : Request for outbuilding, granted. Applications from Newmarket and Whangapoua postponed.
