ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN AN HOTEL.
Yesterday morning early, the police authorities received information from the night porter of the Royal Mail Hotel, Victoria-street, Charles Lee, that one of the servants. Salvador Vos, a West Indian, had attempted to commit suicide by cutting- his throat. Sergeant Donovan went to the hotel, and found the unfortunate man lying in bed, fully dressed, and bed and clothes were covered with blood from the wound in his throat, which was a deep gash, several inches across, but the windpipe was not severed. Dr. Hooper was called in, and he stitched up the wound, and had the injured man conveyed to the Hospital. On enquiring at the Hospital last night, our reporter was informed that Vos was getting on fairly well, and was likely to recover. Vos admitted having committed the rash ace himself, and told the police that they would find the razor at the steps of the back door of the hotel, where he had done the deed. Dr. Hooper and # Sergeant Donovan searched and found it as indicated, and a quantity of blood was on the ground at the spot. The deed was done apparently between four and six o'clock in the morning. At four Salvador was in his room and the light burning. Another man occupied the room also, and at six he woke and asked Vos to get up and Light the candle, but the latter was unable to do so. The man then struck a match and discovered that Vos had attempted to cut his throat. Vos has been for ten years in the Royal Mail Hotel as night porter, and was a steady, honest man. Mr. Maiden, the landlord, speaks well of him, and he was well liked by all. His wife, with her three children, lived in Greystreet,, and he went home with his wages every Saturday evening to his family. During the past week he has been despondent, and apparently some trouble was weighing on his mind. Mr. Maiden asked the reason, and Vos showed two anonymous letters which he had received, and which had excited his jealousy. They were dated May 20 and 22, and apparently from a woman, but not signed.
